Today's the 100th anniversary of the birth of prolific artist James Bama! His over 60 Doc Savage covers were a prime reason for the popularity of the Bantam Books reprints. #docsavage #pulp #adventure #artist #art #paperback

If you like his Savage covers, you should see some of his wild west and Indian (native American) artwork.

Oh, I prefer his later work. His Doc Savage was made to please Bantam Art Director Len Leone and to sell books to the general public. It was never the way I saw Doc Savage as I read the novels.

I did. Well, not as old as he did in Bama's art, but a strong, mysterious man, all out fighting evil. Monk and Ham on the other hand...

And for me, Gary Chaloner got the aides in his style:

Walter Baumhofer was how I visualized Doc.

Oh yes! This is how I actually prefer to see the man of action. Not so much the Ron Ely, movie version who looked too Hollywood, but a real adventurer. Plus ripped shirts to show those muscles!
