If you like his Savage covers, you should see some of his wild west and Indian (native American) artwork.

Oh, I prefer his later work. His Doc Savage was made to please Bantam Art Director Len Leone and to sell books to the general public. It was never the way I saw Doc Savage as I read the novels.

I did. Well, not as old as he did in Bama's art, but a strong, mysterious man, all out fighting evil. Monk and Ham on the other hand...

And for me, Gary Chaloner got the aides in his style:

Walter Baumhofer was how I visualized Doc.

Brilliant artist and my mind’s eye version of Doc, since I discovered him via the Bantam reprints.

I've always preferred the hair on this one over the helmet look.

I agree. I've explained elsewhere how Bantam Doc Savage got that godawful haircut and I get why, but it was never my kind of look.

Oh sorry. I misread your post and regurgitated what you already know. My bad.

Oops. Just saw this. (I start at the bottom of my notifications and worked up. :) ) I hope I didn't bore you with my hair details. Doc Savage research has long been my hobby.

It was the guy who was editing the books. He read in the pulps Doc had a metal headpiece that looked like his hair. So the editor had Bama do The Man of Bronze cover again with that widows peak.

The metal skullcap made it into the magazine only because one of the other writers saw Dent's description of Doc's hair: "his hair was straight, fitting like a metal skullcap" and went literal in his novel and gave Doc one. The actual skullcap was mentioned only a few times.
