Even before I fully understood what it meant for a show to be made in another country, I gravitated toward anime because people actually could die and actions had more consequences. It felt more authentic. Kids can and should handle more than you think!

I love that Galaxy Express 999 was this wildly successful children's series and every planet they visit on their whimsical adventure is either "the horrors of extreme poverty" or "crushing loneliness that no words can describe." A+

I've often wondered if the American censorship approach to violence for the past ~50 years gives us a warped relationship with stuff like violence. Because most the violence is often still there, but the physical effects are hidden. The connection between actions and consequences is absent.

And it's not just kids' media that does it. The PG-13 version is being able to depict countless people getting mowed down as long as we aren't shown blood, as long as the viewer doesn't have to be reminded that these are human beings. How is that not a thousand times more twisted???

Literally the moment this kind of violence hit me as super fucked up was while watching Winter Soldier. It made me so sick to my stomach I actually had to turn it off. And I watched Robocop when I was four!

I think its worse that it has happened while life has (thankfully) removed people from death as much in life. i know young adults that havent had a family member or friend or pet die and they have such a hard time when it inevitably happens.

we have removed/limited it in both life and media, and sanitized it soo much that when someone is in a violent or fucked up situation no one can relate/understand as they have never had to think about it or worry about it. makes it seem like survivors stories are fantasy and distances them more.

It is my firm belief that the whole edgy take on 'adult' genre fiction in the US is stemming from this repression. The kids are raised on stories centered around violence and sex (the whole superhero aesthetic, action figures with the biggest guns possible) bereft of actual violence and sex. 1/2

Naturally, kids feel betrayed and cheated and their biggest fantasy will be "in my stories there will be actual blood and guts flying around and those tight leotards will actually rip off and the girls will want to get naked and naughty" instead of, you know, having actual stories.
