MIND-BLOWING STATS: A record two-thirds of new cars in China are now electric (NEVs*), while combustion-car sales have fallen by two-thirds since they peaked in 2017 – In 2020, ~95% of sales were combustion-engine cars – By Sep 2026, they crashed to 33% – On the flip side, NEVs hit a record 67% 🧵

Combustion-car sales volumes have also fallen two-thirds, from 16.1m in the first 9 months of 2017 to 5.6m in 2026 Next time you hear about job losses, factory closures or financial struggles at western carmakers, remember these stats – and fact that China is world's largest car market

This year has been a particularly wild ride, with NEV sales plummeting in Jan after a decade-long purchase-tax exemption ended – only to recover in a matter of months For fun, here's a version of the chart with teeth:

* To clarify, NEVs are mainly BEVs and PHEVs Interestingly, BEV sales have held up this year, while combustion cars / PHEVs have bombed One factor: the Hormuz crisis. This is “reinforcing China’s electrification of road transport”, says Erica Downs

Interesting. But am I correct in reading this graph that overall car sales (ICE + EV) has gone down in China by ~2-3 million since 2016-2017? What’s explaining that overall trend? A shift in mass transit usage? Economic conditions and income?

I will have to defer to my China colleagues in the details, but either way the market has been roughly flat for a decade. This year perhaps an exception, along with COVID

Hmm. Yes, true, but even that is interesting. I wouldn’t have expected the vehicle market to go flat over that time period. A f’n of flat population? GDP going up over that time though Also, interesting to see that there is a dip in 2019 (re-Covid) and seems to be a dip happening now as well.

While market trends shift, the 2019‑onward Ford Transit boasts an impressive 11,000 L cargo capacity, highlighting its versatility for businesses. – Kıyas Garajı

I was in Beijing a couple of years ago and it was honestly *so cool* to see so many EVs. It also sounded and smelled better. The US is woefully behind, because this IS the future. (Not to mention the 0 to 60mph capabilities 👀)

Xi treated grid expansion as a mandatory national security prerequisite rather than as an easy backwards patch like Elon Musk did. China is more advanced in Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Integration than Musk is in simple energy storage. Xi is very smart. Musk is just a dikk.

Is it possible to start referring to intelligent things happening when rational people act rationally based on the rational economic reality that WE STOP CALLING IT MIND BLOWING SOMEHOW, Simon? How the fuck are people going to do the right thing if you keep pretending doing it is “mind blowing”?

Exactly. The collapse of intelligent decision making processes in Europe and North America is MINDBLOWING. Morons are being worshipped by the majority of European and North American voters (implying they themselves must be morons). China’s implementation of survival packs for the planet is EXPECTED

“Those Chinese doing amazing things is MINDBLOWING because I refuse to believe that Europeans and North Americans are too stupid to get this done” is the implied message.

What *IS* mindblowing is that Europeans are dying in their tens of thousands every year of heat waves and Europeans are so fucking dumb they keep buying shitty German fossil fuel cars that kill Europeans. Refer to the shit European EV graph as MINDBLOWING.

“We need to cut fossil fuel emissions extremely fast to save our civilisation but i find a graph of China doing that mindblowing but a graph of Europe committing mass suicide not mindblowing”. That’s what your communication is saying.

China’s graph is NOT mindblowing if it is EXPECTED that this is what China would do. Which it has been extremely obvious. What IS mindblowing is that Europe which has been bamging on about climate change is now worshipping the rotten German car industry and committing mass suicide.
