Question for anyone who makes things (professionally or personally or somewhere in between): What would you do if you had a whole year, fully funded, with the one requirement that you NOT make anything for public consumption during that year?

To be clear: this is a thought experiment about NOT being able to “be productive with all this time” (with the pressure that entails) These hypothetical funders decree (in Eccentric Robber Baron Style) that NOTHING you make/draft/scheme during the year can ever be public.

...this is so exploitably open ended on the side of the demon offering this deal. Dr. Friedman, I'm very glad demons aren't real because everyone in your comments has lost everything they gained over the year and most the stuff they started with. These are too open to interpretation 😭😭😭

You said 'scheming', friend?! You opened the argument door that any thought that could be construed as planning for the productivity of your future defaults on the deal? If you get a new home and a chair by the window and think 'I'm going to love writing here's you are scheming and lose everything

Brendon Fraser didn't embarrass himself over and over to Elizabeth Hurley as the Devil for me to not know a demon deal when I see one. The Winchesters didn't die 59 times for me to miss those signs.

All that to say, I don't take the money at all because I don't trust these terms as outlined. I'm doing something cool right now and I'm doing it on pennies stolen when I can and I would be devastated to be offered everything I need to do it so long as I essentially throw it away at the end.

It feels so difficult to take this seriously because of how comically perverse it feels to even imagine spending time not being dedicated to productivity to survive. Even if I had the year, I'd likely spend it trying to learn a language or continuing to hone skills I want to use professionally.

Build the "infrastructure" that would make it easier to make my ideas public once the year is up. Be compelled to make notes or plans about ideas I'd had anyway ... which then I think means I'm figuring out how to hide that from the hypothetical funders, or how to usurp them ...

I would be incredibly fine with it. The pressure to publish and be constantly and relentlessly productive sucks any possible joy from my life. I actually hate it. My worth being measured in what I can produce/sell/create makes me feel inadequate and desperate every day of my life
