It's very strange. I had to go to MediaMarkt (Germany) to buy a new webcam + some antennas on short notice today and the portable ACs were sold out. Clearly someone is buying them.

I'm British and I bought a good quality portable unit for £400 after our May heatwave. I know we only deal with these heatwaves a week or two a year (for now) but cooling my home office made it possible to work this week. They're not hard to find

I looked at the price for a cheap split ac system on amazon. Like the kind of thing you'd just need to drill a few small holes through the wall, self install sort of thing. Under $400 bucks. If the issue is windows, tada, here's something that just works with walls.

rapid inflation or rapid deflation such as computers being orders of magnitude better and cheaper, it breaks people’s brain, for the signifier is social and contextual instead of the signifier being someone one can own like a master • I am so tired 😩😅

tbh that isn't an attainable amount for everyone even if it is on the whole quite cheap. but that's why you need stuff like green energy programs hooking people up with heat pumps

Way too many people are arguing that AC is incompatible with windows, walls, building construction, etc rather than it just being a budgetary issue.

They currently cost about £800 because everywhere has sold out. I have no particular animus against AC but I think the US side of this fight has been very badly behaved. The people you are arguing with are very physically uncomfortable, haven’t slept properly in a week and are freaked out!
