I’m watching a thread of people who are demanding 1) an email service alternative to Proton, 2) that doesn’t use AI, and promises to never use AI, 3) is privacy-focused (that means no ads), and finally, is 4) completely free

yeah I lost my job a year and a half ago when NPOs started shedding ops and admin staff and there definitely isn't less admin/ops work to do! there is actually a shitton of work to do across industries! AI hasn't changed that! it's extremely weird+bad no one can seem to get paid to do any of it!

labor law is good and should be enforced. however. it is inconvenient and rude to me, specifically, to force me to take breaks. fucks my whole flow up.

Unrelated: every time Martin Shkreli comes up, I remember when he played the MUD I used to play. he spent ~$5000 on a character to grief people with, only to get permabanned for emoting sucking a guy off as some kind of "own" never saw the players in that game so united in hating one guy.

Related: Martin Shkreli didn't go to jail for raising the price of Daraprim, he went to jail for falsifying GAAP numbers for his hedge fund

I'm aware this story sounds completely insane and made up. it sounds that way even to me and I was there. coda: the guy that sold the character to him won a raffle at the game's convention a year later and got the character back for free.

in game development, players are actually pretty good at telling you when there is a problem with something. they are really astonishingly dogshit at telling you what the cause of or solution to that problem actually is.

it's cool that we have an entire profession ostensibly devoted to supporting people who struggle with things like executive function, memory, and task execution, then penalize them severely and deny them further help for fucking those things up too many times.

I get no-shows suck for the therapist, they cost money, there aren't enough spaces for everyone so you want to make sure people know you Really Mean It when you tell them to show up for their appointment. but this is literally the body of professionals that should know this approach does not work

it was worse when I was in SUD, where my team was given .25% of the tools they needed to help people manage their appointments, said appointments were scheduled 6+ weeks out, and many were there for diversion reasons, so a missed appointment had *devastating* consequences.

maybe conspiracyposting, but imo there is no way at least a few of these were not known to some intel agencies already and probably for a long, long time

These series of dangerous vulnerabilities is scary for sure. But, the really scary part is that state sponsored intelligence services have been playing with these models for a long time now. With less restrictions.

man, shoutout to the IT security manager at work that actually got me a copy of the COI I asked for last week despite, y'know. having some other things to do.

alright I was up hella late doing emergency shit on our server. I've had time to rest, eat, and process. *inhales* WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN OUR VPS IS STUCK ON DEBIAN 11? I'M GOING TO SHIT IN SOMEONE ELSE'S PANTS

maintaining our server has never been my job to be clear. it became my job by default when the last person responsible for it stole $8000 from the project and got shitcanned. I am not good at computer and should not be doing this but I will

I saw a post from someone else saying how glad they were they weren't in charge of anything that uses PHP and suddenly remembered that switching to mediawiki was my bright fucking idea

close friend of ~13 yrs dropped off the face of the planet a few months ago. he lives across the country and went completely black on all his social accounts. no response to any private means of reaching out. it's very unlike him. I got the number of his workplace but haven't had the nerve to call.

adding to the mystery, his steam account mysteriously started logging in again last week. no response to messages and he is exclusively playing weird friendslop games, which is also not like him. feels like no matter what the answer is, it's going to be something bad.

why is all this about the most basic bitch of fetishes. none of these girlies could handle having ao3 accounts. medieval peasant eating a dorito ass reaction

just watched a group of teens move out of the priority seating area on the bus to make room for a guy getting on who was probably 40

hmmmm my wife is sitting at the computer in her undies with multiple terminals and vms open and making extremely excited noises. this only happens when she's about to slap some absolutely ridiculous shit down in front of us. what could it be

counterpoint: kubernetes is exactly like graph theory because I don't understand either of them

oliver@eikopf.com

linear algebra is mostly about the study of vector spaces and operations on them. saying ai is linear algebra is like calling kubernetes graph theory

confession: I own one(1) real leather jacket and it is an almost regrettably good, useful, and cool-looking garment. I'm also a 6ft goth irl, so ymmv

I want to do something important and world-changing and it should pay me a salary

excellent thread. joins neatly with my own concept of "personhood" as a way of describing an agent (or node of agency, perhaps) within a social system.

Grass Toucher Georg@avengingfem.me

i have a working theory that cuts the gordian knot of "is AI conscious". first, consciousness is in most cases a proxy for personhood, in the sense that if AIs are conscious, they should be regarded as people. i dont think most of the discourse is interested in the question merely in the abstract.
