This feels like a tip of the iceberg - I think tech has become a huge psyop at worst and a persuasion tool at best. It has taken the advertisements we learned in grade school (exaggeration, repetition, emotive, personal) and put it on steroids to sell everything from crap to ideas.

👆 Death by a thousand enshitified cuts. Can lead to apathy (most) or exodus (the willing). Left many of the Big Tech players and my mental health has improved dramatically, now urging others to do the same.

There's so many more, DuckDuckGo, Brave, etc. Always looking to options that don't sell my data, try and shove AI down my throat, etc. On social, I pulled our company out of Twitter in 2023, and about to do the same with Substack (no longing vibing with their values) > Blogs & Bluesky.

It's not perfect, but have been looking to more FOSS alternatives, non-subscription options, etc. Microsoft Office > Libre Office, Proton Drive Outlook > Thunderbird (Mozilla), Proton Mail Adobe Suite > Affinity, DocuSeal, DaVinci Resolve + Donate to these teams when you can to show your support.

The section (not here) about CNN is probably not news to journalists but nevertheless should be deeply understood as a major reason clickthrough rates have plummeted. No one likes going to a news website that is trying to monetize via scammy-looking (and -being) ads. A stellar season ender.

I left Facebook 15 years ago and have now migrated from Twitter to Bluesky...both left me feeling mentally unwell. That gnawing pessimism I felt at the other 2 sites that I couldn't explain dissipated upon leaving. Just my experience

i dont think weve accepted the conditions we are in , i think that our generations concerns are just activly ignored , gaslit and sidelined by the very people who can change it in any position in every little way everywhere bc over the last decade it sure as fuck feels like that.

I recently complained on my work feedback portal about the frustrations of getting “help” on our intranet. Instead if phoning a human and using the miracle of voice, we are forced to ask as we imagine how a rando systems guy might assume how the question we’d ask would be presented. Crazy

I'm old enough to remember having to fill out forms on paper with pen. In general, the problem described (death by 10^10 paper cuts) has been raging throughout my lifetime. Some malicious intent is present. Otherwise, managers think, "Let me make my job easier," w/o thinking about your life

When you said, after the election, “we will keep choosing change because the conditions we are in are making us constantly unhappy,” I really feel like you hit on something

while I would say that's a fair assessment I can certainly think of a lot of instances in which tech fucks with me in a big way. When you spend all your time working in the void, the void stops staring and starts scratching your leg like an angry cat.

After we finally got covid vax in Australia, our state government decreed that vax appointments could only be made by mobile phone and if you lived where there was no service then too bad for you, you had to drive to a town far away and force a surly, over-worked & reluctant nurse to vaccinate you.
