Premium: This is The Hater's Guide To NVIDIA: A 14k word guide to how NVIDIA makes its money, how millions of Blackwell GPUs have been sold with nowhere for them to be installed, and how NVIDIA's future relies on companies raising hundreds of billions in debt. www.wheresyoured.at/the-haters-g...

wheresyoured.atThe Hater's Guide To NVIDIAThis piece has a generous 3000+ word introduction, because I want as many people to understand NVIDIA as possible. The (thousands of) words after the premium break get into arduous detail, but I’ve wr...

The tech industry's obsession with GPUs has led every hyperscaler to take on masses of debt, and Oracle, a previously-stable company, has now existentially tied itself to building data centers for OpenAI, a company that burns billions a year. It's all precarious. www.wheresyoured.at/the-haters-g...

I'm an academic physicist with an HPC focus. You used to be able to buy GPUs for science at reasonable prices but academia is priced out now though access is still available through govt supercomputers. If they drop the price by a factor 10 we'd be happy to buy them but that would kill NV margins.

The moral in this tale is that Sun's proprietary HW/OS value went to zero from overselling into a financing bubble and then was crushed as cloud computing went to commodity HW (x86) and OS (Linux) Oracle bought Sun for the Java SW platform/licensing; not clear that Cuda will retain any value...

don't worry, I'm sure they'll all pivot to using the blackwell gpus to mine buttcoins, then start buying weird research chemicals on the darkdankdungeon web, soon after altman and huang will disrupt local street corners with their grand new business idea

Prior to AI book Nvidia still did a pretty darn good business being the premier graphics card for gaming computing and other computers. When the bubble pops, theyll likely just shrink back to that op. It would be valued less but certainly survive.
