I described it as DotCom x Great Recession … It has the “over hyped ahead of working properly” of DotCom, with the “VC and banks will go out of business” of the 2008 Great Recession. And I’m saying it’s like multiplying them not just adding them, because any bailout would need to be like $10T

Dot com bubble wasn’t a case of stuff not working properly even. It worked! Sort of. High speed internet connectivity had not scaled yet and ironically did as a result of this, the website businesses were dumb as shit

Yeah, I was right in the middle of it. And yeah, the whole “dark fiber” thing was a wonder to behold. Now we have “dark GPUs” that will be obsolete by the time the data centers are built, which are waiting for the power and water infra. Yeah lots of companies are going to die.

The corporate credit bust that happened from late 2000 through early 2003 was like a slow motion car wreck. Everyone kept thinking it was finally over...but another shoe kept dropping.

Dell had made a lot of “dellionaires”, so it was a heck of a shock when it caught up to them, and we were watching folks carrying boxes out to their cars. And the whole time we were thinking “any day now it has to turn around, cos the tech is sound”. And it was OK, but couldn’t do what was promised.

It’s hard to beat the traders at their own game— so I diversified into a mix of mutual funds and treasuries, but it’s all a risk. You could sell your stocks and put the cash in the bank, but really no place is safe. Maybe that mattress is the way to go…

I was also in the middle of it, although not in Silicon Valley. Interviewed with startups all over the country in the late '90s. Was laid off by AOL after the Time Warner merger and just before 9/11. The biz models--or lack thereof--were nuts. Very "Underpants Gnomes."

sitting here considering i didn't have DSL until 2003 and i didn't get fiber until 20-fucking-19 before then it was a gradual ramp up from something like 1.5Mbps to about 15Mbps IIRC

it was wild seeing Google go all-in on the Stadia boondoggle like. it wasn't just that you needed the kind of fast Internet connection MOST OF THE COUNTRY DID NOT HAVE have for it to be REMOTELY playable; it's that it would NEVER be as good as a console/PC in your own room by sheer dint of LATENCY
