a very straightforward way to act against data centers is to see if there's any way you can trigger some sort of environmental review or anything else that slows them down by a month or two or three or six. These are all paid for with debt, and are interest-only payments until completion.

I also maintain that most ai data centers are simply never getting built

Probably a bit conspiratorial on my part, but these are very big, very empty buildings. If the tech companies abandon them, we know of one terrible agency looking for a lot of very big, very empty buildings to put people in. This worries me.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I don't think it's all that conspiratorial though. These tech companies are already best buddies with this administration and this administration has been pretty clear what they want. “You don't need a formal conspiracy when interests converge.” - George Carlin

Every suburb in Kansas City right now, and in fact KC itself might get a skyscraper one downtown, is throwing hundreds of millions of dollars to get their own. Just a nightmare as the road infrastructure totally falls apart, a major span over the Missouri River is unusable to the airport right now.

All local government has to do is learn a little bit from history and demand these companies pay the real costs of their infrastructure, water, electricity, and environmental cleanup up front.

And even if you think AI is a solid industry, we have plenty of experience with traditional industries getting infrastructure and tax deals to locate places that they then abandon. Call centers, frack sand mines, there was just a Marketplace segment on a plastics plant in PA.

this is exactly what i think every time i see an announcement. "XYZ is going to build data centre the size of central park!" no they're not. "20GW of compute to be built in rural bumshart!" nuh-uh. "world's largest AI data centre ever to be constru-" nope.
