The rush to expand AI is driving a wave of gas-powered plants just to keep data centers running. Those new plants could make you sick.

The AI boom is driving data center developers to secure their own energy sources instead of relying on the electric grid, often through new gas-powered plants.

Yesterday, Trump’s EPA attempted to distract Americans from its blatant attacks on public health by releasing a list of 100 actions it says it has taken to “protect children’s health and secure America’s future.” is #momsky

Gotta drop a few thoughts on this one, because I think it touches on a big problem on data centre discourse but in a sort of accidental way. (It's an interesting listen w/ lots to agree with and obviously in done in good faith so please don't take these thoughts as a big dunk or anything)

There is a lot of doom in the air around the twin existential threats of AI and climate change. Can we use this moment of rapid infrastructure expansion to kickstart our transition to clean energy? My full conversation with climate tech expert Steph Speirs is live on YouTube now!

There are a mix of issues regarding environmental injustice in Niagara Falls and surrounding areas, from legacy radiological contamination to ongoing chemical pollution - this petition is specifically in support of the McKiernan family. actionnetwork.org/petitions/lo...

actionnetwork.orgLove Canal families deserve protection, truth and justice.Nearly 50 years ago, 900 families were relocated after 22,000 tons of toxic waste poisoned their Niagara Falls Love Canal neighborhood. Today, families are still exposed to dangerous contamination. ...

They learned recently that their home, adjacent to Love Canal, was built on industrial fill that really should have been remediated half a century ago during the original LC disaster, but the decisionmakers at that time decided the property was outside of the area of concern.

Luella Kenny is the woman in the photo, who lost her son Jon Allen 50 years ago this month due to exposure from Love Canal and has since dedicated her life to preventing other families from experiencing the same. Please sign the petition and share it widely.

"Last week, New Jersey fined DataOne $1.1 million for running 45 unpermitted generators. This was the largest enforcement action the state has ever taken against a data center. It’s also a rounding error for a big data firm. Rest unassured, the generators are still running"

Here's the tl;dr on Suncor v. Boulder, a major environmental case in the latest SCOTUS term: For decades, fossil fuel companies knew their products caused CO2 levels to spike, leading to global warming. Oil and gas executives knew this could lead catastrophic results.

Workers, especially outdoor workers, are harmed by Big Tech's fossil fuel infrastructure buildout: "Beyond the meager ratio of job creation to investment, we should not allow corporations to balloon our energy consumption while wildfires, superstorms and extreme heat ravage our country."

@pkrugman.bsky.social on the political transformation underway due to AI and data centers. "Even the usual argument for pro-oligarch policies — job creation! — falls flat because hardly any jobs are being created even in the short run." Cites BLS stats on the job category including data centers.

The Buffalo Common Council added an amendment to the two-year data center moratorium to establish a taskforce to develop regulations, and sent the amended version of the resolution to Corporation Counsel - while this lengthens the timeline for the passage, it is still moving forward. More to come!

The US Senate finds that the fossil fuel industry received $190 billion in tax breaks and subsidies from the Trump regime in exchange for campaign donations. The deregulation and subsidies have increased both energy costs for Americans and the damage from climate change and air and water pollution.
