gimp is kinda jank yeah but when people have Serious Takes about how it needs to improve all i can read is "here is how these four guys working intermittently for free have FAILED to live up to the international company making twenty billion dollars a year"

Chris Person@papapishu.bsky.social

GIMP is objectively unintuitive and also can’t parse text layers of PSDs properly, it’s designed by FOSS people that have never created tools for professionals. Telling someone to use it for their job is like saying you can make a feature on iMovie. Technically true but not serious.

"personally i would just make it be good" great, stop fucking posting about it and get to work then

this is frustrating in a way that's hard to fit in a bleat but it boils down to people not appreciating the outright miracle that open source software is in the first place and then wanting to be treated like a customer when it's not an exact replica of something that costs $700

the thing krita and blender have in common is that PEOPLE GAVE THEM A LOT OF MONEY

Lufty@lufty-luft.bsky.social

But still... blender actually got some traction once they decided to make things more user friendly. Krita's newer than the GIMP, and much more popular. UX is something that does matter, even making allowances for 'free and volunteer made' open source software.

the developers of other foss software aren't idiots waiting for someone to tweet "have you tried making good ux?" at them — they just don't have the resources to hire ux designers and do user studies and whatever else because they are giving their fucking work to you for free

The anger at the GIMP is a bit overblown, but at the same time, someone saying that it's a easy drop in replacement for... any other paint program, welp. That's an easy person to dunk on.

blender was able to make things more user friendly when they got a shitload of money from companies realizing sponsoring development was still cheaper than paying autodesk

Blender used to have a 'user friendy' fork as well. The existance of these sorts of mods or forks for a piece of software is kinda a bad thing.

YES it's frustrating to build something in your spare time that you freely allow others to use and they go out of their way to say how terrible and traumatizing it is because it needs some adjustments. Either offer graciously to help with the adjustments or leave the developers alone

I don't like GIMP but this Chris guy sounds like a real tool. "Open source people" bitch, I can't get FOSS project to agree not to use the orphan killing machine sometimes, we aren't a hivemind and that's kinda the point.

Don't even get me started on people saying you can't just post on Mastodon. I get that it's different, I get there's a learning curve, but some ppl genuinely act like up is down and left is right. Idek how they manage to struggle so much.

I honestly think every designer should do some time working on foss stuff in the same way programmers often do, like adobe has massive design teams, foss software are lucky to have one.

yeah there doesn't seem to be a culture of foss design the way there is for programming and i don't really know what there is to do about that

all the tools we use in foss are extremely programmer brained. no(?) foss projects use figma or other design programs, and ask yourself if you’d be comfortable suggesting that they should if you were not a programmer. In game dev its hard to make artists use a git client where they just press sync

“just press sync” git clients never work because git was never made to work that way, and people can tell immediately, putting them off the whole workflow unless you force it.

it takes so much effort to go from programmer (you write scripts and apps) to foss programmer (you are good at VCS systems, common foss workflows e.g. PR submission, review, culture, and great at communicating asynchronously). I think we underestimate the expertise required to participate by a lot

Most people who has tried wafrn has been nice. Most people. Some understand that it is what it is and do their best to “hey I found a problem: if im on the shower while cosmic rays from saturn this button explodes” (helpful!) But some people that I can count with my hand… my brain hides that

Like mate, its an open source project made by a guy on his free time who got anoyed at tumblr Other people used their free time to improve it too, and someone was so annoyed at my design decisions that he made his own app for it. Wich now is available on appstore and fdroid too

i'm honestly mostly fine with gimp and it mostly slots in perfectly to my workflow in place of photoshop - really, the only thing i miss with gimp is that i don't have the same text editing tools, which sucks bc i really like the text editing abilities in photoshop out of the box

im aware that there's probably a plugin that gets me like 90% there to the functionality in photoshop, but i still wish it was built-in so i didnt have to go plugin hunting

idk why it's even relevant to getting people off windows like people are generally already going to be using wine (in whatever form) for games, why not just keep using photoshop in wine too?

also complaining that it isn't perfect at parsing adobes proprietary undocumented format they change constantly as if that's anyone's fault but adobe's

I usually use any other tool, except at work where its only that or Krita, and sometimes I need to throw together graphics. That said, GIMPs color to opacity tool is literally the best out of any out there. It gives you a level of control no other application does.

It’s the air of defensiveness being called out. It’d be one thing if Isobel responded “Ok fair but I’m doing this for free cut me some slack” but when they chose to insult their critics’ intelligence instead it makes me think it’s more than a lack of resources making the UI suck.

I know I'm an outlier here, but I prefer GIMP. It's loads more intuitive, to me, for my (non-professional) needs, than any of those other tools. Actually, I also used it briefly for some paid graphic design work with no problems.

i still crack it open regularly yeah. krita is much smoother for drawing but gimp is straightforward for just fuckin... well manipulating an image i guess

i don't like GIMP at all but oh god, the kind of person who writes such rants about why open source software is bad is a thousand times more annoying than any of the people who spend their time trying to convince others to switch to open source software

mm i love to be insistently told that my audio doesn't work by people who only have one linux joke. my heart goes out to everyone who has to hear "have you tried linux" like twice a year though
