ladies, is your programming - a field dominated by rich white men - driven by fashion trends - practiced as a demonstration of status - funded by vanity projects for failsons - filled with queers trying and failing to break even that's art, sorry

Nyek London@stupidhoroscope.bsky.social

I don’t know how people could say that programming and art are completely different disciplines when both workflows involve going ‘This will never work, I’m a failure’, changing one thing, then thinking you might be the smartest person alive

banned pokémon episode 6: the mandarin island miss match wow, this is weird. the gang meets prima, who is just lorelei. she has lorelei's design and lorelei's pokémon. but she's not called lorelei for some reason. did they just not recognize her as a major character when they dubbed this maybe

jynx appears and blasts team rocket near the end and that was enough to get this one dropped from rotation. not much else to say about it i guess. ash learns a valuable lesson about being bffs with his pokémon. also charizard goes fuckin nuts for a hot minute

and that's it! we are done with banned episodes until the ice cave, which isn't until the third season of johto. it was pulled because it features — you're never gonna believe this — jynx

banned pokémon episode 5: stage fight! the least interesting pulled ep so far. there's a showboat and they do pokémon theater with human actors voicing their dialogue from backstage, a technique pioneered by the well-known musical Singin' In The Rain Dance

we've watched almost the entire series in german (and the undubbed ones in japanese), but i could only rustle up these ones in english, and tracey's voice itched at me, and i had to look it up and turns out tracey is bandit keith. this has nothing to do with this episode i'm just letting you know

no shade meant by "least interesting" btw. there are dancing pokémon and it's nice. it's just got some pretty tough competition: "santa is real", "the gang goes into the computer", "ash catches 30 tauros by accident", "james and the giant peaches"

there's a brief subplot about a girl who is scared of her raichu because it shocked her. about ten seconds after explaining this, she just gets over it. that's most of what happens oh togepi does try to go on stage. i very much enjoy "togepi wanders somewhere" as a plot driver. best character

lost lore i don't remember seeing elsewhere: team rocket's magikarp submarine can fire magikarp missiles OH you know what, also? in BOTH this and holiday hi-jynx, jessie sends out james's weezing! i don't remember them ever using each other's pokémon before but now the jynx eps are two for two!

anyway the pokémon all do a chorus line, at which point it is revealed that jynx (who appears briefly but has no bearing on the plot) has human feet under there. i choose to believe that this, specifically, is why the episode was pulled

i may have made that last bit up there is a moment where meowth is briefly fooled by the ventriloquism and thinks he's met a bunch of other talking pokémon and starts tearing up and saying he understands what they all went through. it's slightly heartbreaking that it's not real

we just finished kanto (finally) so we went back and picked up banned pokémon episode 4: holiday hi-jynx this episode establishes that santa claus is real and canon in the pokémon universe and a single rapidash pulls his sleigh. also lapras are telepathic. until orange islands when they're not

eevee@eev.ee

allegedly the next banned episode (and original next episode), holiday hi-jynx, was shuffled in the order (due to the show going on hiatus after porygon) and still exists dubbed with jynx repainted purple, although i don't know where exactly

oh i guess it is helpful to mention, for those not aware, that this episode was pulled because the original jynx design bore an unfortunate resemblance to blackface. whoops

oh right, ash's pokédex emphasized that lapras can understand human speech, as if that were a distinctive capability. but uh the entire show is people talking to pokémon all the time?? trainers give complex commands?? they can very clearly understand humans what are you talking about

i was always under the impression that jynx was inspired by ganguro, but i guess we don't actually know for sure? but i would like to think this was a wildly unfortunate cultural coincidence

i can't stop thinking about team rocket tying up santa and stealing all the toys. fairly oddparents ass episode

absolutely baffling stuff. apparently this originally aired in japan in early october, though i guess it would've been slated for the previous year's dec 23 (a week after electric soldier porygon) and then uhh some stuff happened

indescribably tragic that dropping this episode removes santa claus from the american pokémon canon anyway santa has an army of jynx instead of elves, and i can safely say that the optics of having them doing unpaid labor are, um, worse

i am like a god to anise. i'm so much bigger than him that i can just pick him up and move him anywhere. i supply his food and decide where he can go or not go. despite all this he still tries to knock my phone off my desk to get my attention

wow html5lib and bleach are both unmaintained?? what the hell happened over the past few years

losing my mind a bit here. bleach is deprecated. html5lib's cleaner is deprecated, directing people to bleach, before /it/ was deprecated; also they haven't had a release in six years. nh3 binds to a rust thing but doesn't reformat which i kinda want. lxml can do both but it would use html5lib

never mind i guess lxml removed their cleaner anyway. it feels very silly to serialize html and then parse it again with a different library for the sake of pretty-printing it but uhh maybe i will just, do that

the computer nerds are saying "4" is a bad private key and yet no one had guessed it until now because they were trying all the big numbers instead

it's even the combination i use on my luggage and i've never had a problem with it

thinking about image formats again, after reading two blog posts extolling the technical virtues of AVIF over JXL i think what's mostly rattling around in my head is that until today i don't think i've ever knowingly seen an AVIF in the wild

View full thread

also i think a sticking point is that for ages we had "PNG is lossless, JPEG is lossy", but now we have all these formats that can do both and you lose some amount of signalled intention. and that's a shame idk. i wonder what will happen

also for the record i already have jxl support in dolphin (file browser), gimp, krita, and imagemagick. i guess it's not in aseprite but otherwise that's pretty solid

WebP is entrenched but it has not exactly won hearts and minds. average people mostly seem to resent encountering it there is some excitement for JXL (somehow), but i wonder what it would look like for JXL to actually "win"

it would need support in a long tail of applications and web things that accept images, which is an uphill battle given that even WebP has yet to achieve that is there a world where artists export their work as JXL instead of PNG i wonder

discord and bluesky use WebP. twitter still uses JPEG! who is actually using AVIF? i have no idea. and the Big Three have supported it for five years i'm not sure i've ever even seen anyone complain about it the way people do with WebP. it may as well not exist

"we're not releasing on xbox due to BDS" about a game that released for windows and not linux

yeah alright fair

Weasel ⛳🏌️@wildweasel486.bsky.social

just spotted someone going on about "sure you're boycotting Xbox but you're still publishing your game for Windows" and then someone else going "well hope you devved it entirely in Linux" MS doesn't get a cut, guys. This isn't console land where the platform owner charges cert and lot check fees.

It is generally good life advice that if you ever hear some "everyone knows" third party gossip about a trans creator or public figure, your 1st instinct should be to disbelieve it, your 2nd instinct should be NOT to pass it on, and 3rd to check VERY THOROUGHLY who's saying it and where it came from

Jessie Gender@jessiegender.bsky.social

One of the worst parts of being a creator, especially a trans one, is watching disinformation about you spread from bad actors to other folks like a bad game of telephone so you see people literally judge you on shit you never said/did or is completely opposite to the point you were making.
