every fucking website now is basically "install bonzai buddy directly into your pocket for the best experience!" and i can't believe we put up with it

installing a custom program to read 1 website on your real computer would seem utterly deranged but it's normal for your worse smaller computer

that is generally to allow it to do things that web browsers do not allow a website to do (for good reason) and i don't know of any website that makes it mandatory

Dedicated apps let them push ads and collect usage data that a competent browser wouldn't allow, when they say "for the best experience" they mean for them not you

I think this fails Hanlon's razor. They're just trying to circumvent adblockers (and in Reddit's case possibly to drive down the rate of people using the old, good website layout so they have an excuse to retire it).

most people on phones don't have functional ad blocking! that's mostly on desktop
