i am like a god to anise. i'm so much bigger than him that i can just pick him up and move him anywhere. i supply his food and decide where he can go or not go. despite all this he still tries to knock my phone off my desk to get my attention

Maybe it's the same for people with sacrifices. It didn't get the gods' attention as a symbol of devotion, it was calling the harvest god down with a "you little shits, I gave you that wheat to *eat* not to burn! If I send rain will you stop breaking everything?"
