Still basically local presidents, the current English regional set up is a disaster, & putting entire ergions under one person rather than have legitimate regional government is a travesty, I have looked at these different entities & no 2 are the same, none are actually democratically run *

Regional government, elected by open list full PR, to be led by an appointee of the ruling coalition (usually leader of the largest party), Police, NHS, fire, ambulance & other regional functions requiring democratic input to be represented at this level... The current patchwork is utterly mad...

Exactly. I'm very interested in politics and would say I have a better than averag chance of picking a top 2 but in the past there have been loads of times when I'd have got it wrong and would have wasted vote. Why not let people rank everyone, even if you discard everything after the second pref.

They're restoring the voter system that the Tories abolished. The Tories did not have a mandate to change the system, as residents voted to establish these bodies in the knowledge that STV would be used. What is being done here is simply a restoration of what people voted for.

Genuinely surprised - had thought they might scrap that idea after doing so badly in May. Pleasantly so, although AV or a French-style two-round system would've been better. Also think it's hypocritical saying FPTP is unacceptable for mayors + PCCs but absolutely fine to elect English councillors.
