hot take: I would rather read your imperfect English in your own voice than perfect LLM English that makes all writing narratively the same

Your English isn't perfect? You sometimes break rules? So what! It's your voice, and it's infinitely more interesting to read than the samey narrative structures that LLMs produce. Just write; it was always enough before, and it is still enough now.

My favorite book has an entire chapter written from the “wrong” point of view and it’s one of my favorite parts of the story. Writing doesn’t need perfection to be excellent

Project Hail Mary! The entire book is from Grace’s point of view except for one section which follows Strat in third person during the courtroom scene

I hope we can recalibrate our expectations of human writing. Elegant prose is a skill, and it takes years of effort to cultivate. Just like not everyone can do a triple lutz, we shouldn’t expect its writing equivalent. I’ll take clarity and precision over text that is moving in scientific papers.

Setting the bar of academic writing that should be beautiful and impactful was probably too much. If you de-stigmatize some writing expectations, you will like decrease the incentive to reach for LLMs.
