I’ve been thinking a lot about chess and other strategy games lately, and how they relate to fighting games, philosophically. Both are games of endurance in decisionmaking.

In chess there is a tendency to conflate success with intelligence and in fighting games the same is said about reaction speed, I think both are untrue in similar ways. Both are games of study, of presenting options to your opponent that are bad for them, waiting for them to take one.

The traits of a good chess player and a good fighting game player overlap in obsessiveness and ruthlessness. The will to learn and the will to win.
