To be more clear, if you’re still using Meta products after this, I reserve the right as a queer person to call you a asshole.

New: Meta has deleted trans and nonbinary Messenger themes, as well as the blog posts announcing them. Happens the same week that it has changed its rules to allow users to say LGBTQ+ people are "mentally ill" www.404media.co/meta-deletes...

Yes, I know it’s hard to cold-turkey Meta products immediately, I’ve heard every rationale, but I would sure like to see some goddamn movement away from giving that demonic man and his genocidal website the attention it needs to survive.

Another way to put this is “if you call yourself an ally to LGTBQ people but can’t be arsed to distance yourself from Meta, you’re a pretty pathetic-ass ally.”

One more way to phrase this: far harder choices than “leaving Meta” are likely to come over the next four years if you claim to be a true ally of the people that Trump will persecute. If you can’t even pull this off, I do question your commitment to the cause in the dark days to come.

That's just really harsh.. I understand you're mad, but to my knowledge, no social media platform has taken advantage of collective outrage in order to actually try to dethrone FB. Your priorities may be different, but I like to have my family know that I care about what's going on in their lives

To make it clear, I have zero activity on the platform in the last decade. But my mom loves to post her pictures there. It took her years to get comfortable with fb. As much as she cares for LGBT+ crowds, she's not going to ditch fb for bluesky or anything that is not a 1:1 copy of fb.

I was going to be talking with my parents in the next few days about getting them off there, but before I could even reach out, my dad e-mailed me asking about setting up an account/feeds on bluesky. He's looking to get alternative contacts sorted out with friends/family and drop facebook entirely.

One thing I’ve found that can help convince people to leave FB: Most people don’t know you can download your entire FB/insta account data. That means you can keep everything you’ve ever posted, made, and changed.

I don’t post, but Meta has such a stranglehold on the internet that I’m forced to use Facebook for wildfire updates in my area from the Forest Service because government officials can’t be bothered to post on their own taxpayer-funded website. This degree of monopoly should be totally illegal.

This. Look I get it we all wanna leave, I deleted my own original account back in 2017. However, I do have a small account I don't use to post but it's 100% necessary as a parent. My kid's school groups, district updates, it's ALL there, often in private groups.

I don't really care about Facebook or Insta, but in many parts of the world (not including the US, I guess), dropping WhatsApp is practically impossible. It's like forgoing, say, email. Would be *real* nice to see a non-Meta based alternative become a real option, though.

What's the replacement for a social media site where I can lock my posts to only friends or people I want to see them and not have the rest of the planet see everything I post?

I've left my Facebook and Instagram up in near-zombie status for the past couple years in case more peripheral friends/family want to get in touch with me, but maybe it's time to just let that go like we did for all of history leading up to the social media era.

Been about a decade fb/meta free, for me. The hardest part is losing contact with that wider circle of people who are not in your daily orbit. But do I really need to know which HS classmates have gone full MAGA? For anyone else, my cell # hasn't changed in decades. They know where to find me.
