Yep, I travel a lot internationally and have never encountered someone who was unpleasant to me just because I’m American. I think many Americans who don’t travel abroad much seem to *hugely* overestimate the odds of non-Americans being rude to them simply for being Americans.

I've also found it rare to meet an America hater across the 6ish continents I've worked across. Most people are excited that you came to visit and are being polite and respectful (bonus points if you try to speak a couple local language greetings). They'll also generally br very curious about you!

Yup. And they pretty much always are highly sympathetic to those of us who didn’t vote for The Creature.

Most non anglosphere folks (and chill ppl from the UK) are generally pretty sympathetic to the whole "right wing asshole who won't go away" thing, having dealt with it themselves recently (or are also still dealing with it!)

it IS strange to me how many otherwise intelligent & reasonable americans assume our country is the only one to ever deal with a horrific leader, and that nobody else can sympathize

Yes! Americans have an entire history with not-terrible-by-world-standards leadership until now, but most of the rest of the world is quite unfortunately used to dealing with decent people from countries with crappy corrupt governments.

yeah. like, yeah, we’re bad, but a lot of people seem to have no idea what horrific crimes of slavery & colonization were perpetrated by european and certain asian countries

right?? that’s the thing that boggles me bc the people i’m thinking of definitely are the type to know at least the highlights of 20th c european history but don’t seem to connect the dots we didn’t even invent fascism

True; and at the same time, on _this_ social media site in particular, you frequently see Europeans excoriating all 350 million of us for not strapping on bomb vests and making a run for hard targets, so it’s understandable that folks think you might run into some of that out there.
