"Honestly, if we end up with two hundred and twenty-five seats on the White Council, I would be disappointed. I would rather Sauron keep control of Middle-earth by five seats than have the Fellowship win by five, because then we’d be hostage to the Ents." buff.ly/9WluK1y

Blue county turnout vs red county turnout — the absolute numbers aren’t comparable, but the 29% increase vs the 1% increase feels meaningful.
First day of voting in Texas has concluded. Over a quarter million people have voted; 48% of them voted in the Democratic primary, and 28% voted in the Republican primary. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s not a bad sign either. theoelections.com/early-vote

That this bot, which posts random stills and clips from the thousands of hours of VHS transfers on archive.org, landed on *this specific frame* feels like finding the monkey at the typewriter that managed to write Hamlet.

I got to know Rich when Ritual and Rogue made mission packs for Quake 2 and I got to work with him directly at Ritual for a few years. He was a guy who cared genuinely about passing down his knowledge to others and helping devs in their careers. His influence is immeasurable and he will be missed!
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Richard “Levelord” Gray. From his legendary work on Duke Nukem 3D to the countless players and developers he inspired, Richard leaves behind a lasting legacy. Rest in peace, Levelord.
We give the NYT a lot of grief for the harm they’ve done to public discourse by normalizing clearly psychotic behavior, so it’s only fair that we point out where they do actually get it right. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/08/u...

I wonder how much good it will do: my wife is a voter registrar and has spent pretty much all of the past week going to events to get folks registered. Today, she checked the registration of a man who had voted in the primaries, and he’d been removed for “inactivity.” His surname? Yeah, Hispanic.
Latino voters have deeply soured on President Donald Trump and his party, particularly on crucial economic issues, a new NBC/Telemundo poll finds.
TEXAS PEOPLE — if you haven’t checked your voter registration, you have ONLY FOUR DAYS before it’s too late to register to vote in the midterms. There’s a lot of voter suppression shenanigans going on, so don’t assume anything; go check: www.texas.gov/living-in-te...

A familiar story for anyone who follows @volts.wtf. “The Chronicle spoke to more than half a dozen grid experts…to try to understand why Texas’s notoriously unreliable grid had a remarkably reliable summer. The answer was unanimous: solar panels and batteries.”
I don’t know how people can watch these repeated incidents of flat out lawlessness and also question the level of general support for a military coup. The judiciary has completely forfeited its duties, so what check is left?
We’ve been in a constitutional crisis since Jan. 20, 2025 and a blue wave in November won’t fix it if Trump can just ignore legislation passed by Congress.

There’s some confusing terminology going on: some folks are using “reasoning” to mean “taking a set of input facts, applying an arbitrarily complex set of lemmas, and deriving a set of output facts,” while some are using it to mean “that plus has a soul” and one just feels more intellectually honest
And the most astonishing thing is how recent this all is: DURING MY LIFETIME, there was a period where banks refused to issue credit cards to women. Solely one rhe basis of gender, they simply refused to even consider it.
I genuinely think that one of the biggest feminist challenges right now is that feminism was so successful that a lot of people can’t even imagine what the world was like before it.
