As a middle schooler, even I knew how dumb everything was. My protest was to wear a rainbow tie dye shirt on 9/11/2002, really thought I was doing something there

Oh yeah, I feel that. Just being 13 and having big thoughts suddenly about jingoism

thankfully my parents and family are very sane people with great politics who didn't buy into any of that crap, but it was really weird seeing it around in The Culture

I'm having some galaxy brain thoughts about this right now, just the idea of 9/11 happening when I was 12 and then feeling at the time like the broader cultural vibe was identical to how my middle school classmates talked about 9/11...like it foreshadowed the "everyone is 12 now" theory
