Big AI’s whole schtick now is convincing themselves that they and their friends are the most important people on earth working on the most important project in the history of mankind, and that means you can’t have any boundaries if you want to work with them

arguably these people are even worse than normal dead-eyed capitalists in that you pretty much have to live in their icky group houses and believe in their weird shit to access the huge sums of money they’re throwing around

Silicon Valley in the age of Big AI is kinda like a much dumber Los Alamos in the Manhattan Project era, except with zero disapproving normie government oversight. Also, they’re not building a nuclear bomb in the midst of a nightmare world war, they’re building a chatbot.

I mean, I guess this is kinda covered by your second 'graph, but the existential threat of the Germans getting the bomb first was at least plausible up through V-E Day. The SV folks are worried about the dumbest riff on Pascal's Wager (already a dumb argument to begin with) in human history.

Perhaps someone misunderstood a mic-drop moment being described as a conversational nuclear bomb...and then a bunch of idiots played telephone.
