If the people in power were really that concerned with the children and child predators, they would've got rid of christian churches a long time ago.

the people that hurt them are often the people trying to push the laws and using "protection of children" as a bludgeon against criticism of draconian measures

Children are historically and still treated as bargaining chips. Hopefully, we can someday give them enough agency to protect themselves from adults who would exploit and abuse them. Be it authority figures, parents, or institutional inertia. Kids need to have a measure of power.

A little reminder that whenever a law or something is passed to "protect XYZ", it often has nothing to do with said XYZ. Because a law that does it jobs properly doesn't need to be advertized as "protecting XYZ". You're supposed to understand it from the law itself without advertising
