As far as I can tell the meaning and practice of them commandment things is pretty much meaningless to the practitioners of the religions that promote them, except as a club to use against others.

If the 10 commandments text is in schools it should be with other notable religious texts as part of a secular, educational discussion on the different religions around the world. They should not be used to proselytize or indoctrinate children.
