watching a society learn that basically no one considers what everyone else does all day "real work" is very interesting and also very depressing

conceptually i agree but i don't even joke about general strikes anymore, the false-hope waveform is bad for all organizers everywhere

Yeah, if you’re not *personally* in a position to organize a general strike, you should probably stop talking about general strikes. They’re like the tooth fairy in that regard.

i dealt with that about fifteen years ago. i was staying at my mother's place in rural virginia; one morning her landlord busted into the house, drunk off his ass with his battered wife in tow, and while getting in my face about my mother's rent expressed incredulity that a computer job was "real"

(this was an economically depressed area that used to be on a railroad that had gotten torn up about fifty years prior, and by then the biggest employer in the area was a correctional facility, as well as bunch of surrounding farms)

thank god i had the door to the bedroom locked on impulse because otherwise he would have literally just opened the door on me in there. he also shut the electricity off in retaliation for something my mother did or didn't do or whatever it was

what's also scary is that he apparently didn't know i was staying there, which meant that he was actually just intending to bust in on my mother while she was sleeping if she had been present (she was staying at a boyfriend's house out of state)

(i made more money waiting tables 3 days a week for lunches than I do at my 5 day production job where “we work for our money”)
