Sure, parking companies have been a source of frustration to drivers, adding an unpredictable financial risk to every journey taken by car, but AIUI there’s downsides to them as well

The NYT review of Digger is shockingly shallow, draws a stupid comparison to Citizen Kane, and then *spoils the wrong twist*. Which makes me wonder if *I'm* the idiot and it is itself a piece of beautiful metafiction.

I'm too French, I first read this as Tom Holland quoting Robespierre approvingly. I forgot that to older British gentlemen he's Satan with fewer redeeming qualities

This is how British public figures behave when they’re asked to take some responsibility for their action in *one specific case*, in which a man has died.

I'm a big fan of everyone having one particular thing that defines them to a first approximation, and this tweet is nailed on Marie's. More than just Marie, truth be told.

It's obviously false. If liberal democracy always led to fascism there wouldn't be any liberal democracies left. One should generally avoid the term "always" when making a historical claim. A fascist takeover requires the passive or active consent of the elite but that's just what "takeover" means.

This post is unavailable.

When the takeover has happened it's because they were able to force or persuade the elite to give their passive or active consent. But the takeover doesn't always happen. (A co-ordinate cliché is "fascism can only be ended with violence", also not true)
