Carefully optimistic about this. I interpret it as an attempt at nipping third-party age verification in the bud, similar to the EU's plans for a smart phone age bracket API. Of course, the danger is that is becomes a wedge by which more biometric data and remote OS+user checking are pushed in.

Not happening, CA. And it won't be the first time I've used FOSS to give the digital middle finger to legal bullshit. I still have my DeCSS t-shirt in my closet as a reminder. Might need to start wearing it more often.

It's headscratcher. I think it's as useful as "Yes, I'm over 18" button on a porn page, but whatever. I guess I can live with there being API which tells an age bracket of user. Definitely beats adding age to every little application or sending all your personal and biometric data to a shady company

Nah its more useful. Because parents should be setting up their kids accounts, so they would set the age to what it ought to be, but it doesnt touch any of us adults. The parents are choosing to click the i am over 18 button for the kids in this case.

Just like some parents may give their under 18s alcohol. But that doesnt mean in general it fails to prevent abuse.

I'm from the generation which was capable of installing an OS at the age of 14-15. Installing new OS is even easier these days. What about phones and factory reset? Does that make consumer electronics adult only then?

Some of our generation was capable. Do not mistake your abilities for the general populace. But also, sure some kids will find a way around it. Even with ID checks that could happen (EG steal a parent's ID). It will largely prevent things if a parent sets it up, but not stop everything.

The EU enforces laws onto US companies plenty with like GDPR. But in this case websites may become the enforcement as they may choose to comply with this once its built in, and thus limit access to anything without the capability.

A law that benefits Microsoft and Apple, given they both *really* want or need you to have an account with them. And how does this work in the enterprise world?

Apple will likely build some sort of privacy mechanism in, whether good or bad, for marketing purposes. Microsoft, nah.. they will blatantly just take your data and use it how they like.

"or some kind of statement on their downloads page on how it's not to be used in California" Does kind of remind me of early internet where you'd get some warning to not download strong cryptography software outside the US but everyone just ignoring it.

The law is not "upcoming". It is already established law. bsky.app/profile/tant... just with a "grace period" before enforcement.
