Dear Diner: Just be a diner. Don’t renovate to try to look fancier or sexier or like something you’re not. Just be a diner. We love you for it, and we sometimes need a break from the “it” restaurants. Extra points for linoleum tabletops, vinyl booths, good coffee, and the definitive burger deluxe.

My fav sushi place took over a 50s style burger joint. Checkerboard flooring, diamond plate metal wainscoting, curved bar w barstools--the whole 50s burger experience. They didn't change any of it lol. Sadly they're carry out only since covid.

I once owned and operated a diner. We did renovate it, and it did make it better. It was a fabulous diner. (BTW, this was back in the mid-80s)

I still have my parents formica kitchen table and chairs. It's yellow and the top of the line and in perfect condition except the chairs need recovering. I Love it. And love those old diners just the way they are.

If I'm going to a diner, I'm going to a diner. I'm not interested in walking into some wackadoo theme restaurant. Black Bear is the furthest diner theming should go. It's also delicious.

I’m happy with large fluffy pancakes, a perfect over medium, fresh coffee, and flat crispy bacon. It’s a simple thing that requires attention and care. Yet, so hard to find.

Since moving to Europe, I've not had the pleasure of a diner, awesome hash browns for breakfast, or a nice lady offering to top up my coffee for free. Sure, there are some lookalikes nowadays sprinkled across the landscape, but it's just not the same. Thanks. Now I'm homesick.

I had the joy of finding a diner in Düsseldorf. The engineer owner had spent years working in Worcester Mass and duplicated the diner experience in Germany. Don’t know if it’s still there.

Totally agree. A local deli, which under old management made some really awesome basic good sandwiches wrapped in butcher paper was bought out and now they have all these sandwiches with multiple sauces and "creative" condiments packed in styrofoam containers. I miss the old guys.

When I lived in NJ, I liked that I could stop in a diner day or night and get some coffee and a ham and cheese omelette. A good diner is a place where you can go to get comforting food and eat it in a room full of people as if you were alone.

Diners are as New Jersey as malls, the shore, and pizza. Someone should write a book rating 5 diners in each of the 21 counties on 5 diner standards: coffee, burger deluxe; fries and gravy; Taylor ham, egg, and cheese on a Kaiser roll with home fries; tuna melt. NJ diners are a national treasure.

This vegetarian has been known to fall off the wagon for a good fried pork roll with egg and cheese on a hard roll when I’m at a Jersey diner. Taylor ham and Kaiser rolls? What are they? 😘

Moved from Jersey to N.C. and although the food has been excellent, I miss an old school diner. Waffle House doesn't even come close..but amusing. I'd kill for some chicken croquettes in mystery gravy right about now

Similar thing happened near me. These two, maybe three restaurants, near me are owned by the same people now who bought out the original owners. Two were diners. They kept trying to push alcohol sales, renovate, and they changed the menu at least 5 times in 2 years. My former fave closed last year.

And this was a local favorite place that had been around for like 40 years already. I'll never understand why they ruin a good thing and push away their regulars. The staff basically all left, and it became a hallow shell of what it was that was overpriced and nowhere near as good.

Ours was across the street from a small airport. People who owned their own planes went there and liked the food and the ambience. The new owners didn’t realize that plane owner/operators don’t dress up. And they got rid of lotto! That was a huge revenue stream.

The best part is people still only order burgers and breakfast stuff. Although there’s always that one guy in your group that does the surf and turf from a diner. At least here.

And you must keep open-faced turkey and open-faced roast beef sandwiches. In the summer, my husband and I take our motorcycles three hours away from home just for a good old timey diner.

As someone who has worked BOH and FOH, I hate brunch culture with a wild passion. Among the many reasons, I feel like it has impacted the existence of the classic, reliable diner. If I do go out for breakfast, I just want to sit at a counter and smash a Denver omelette with hash browns and toast.

I know the very moment you’re referencing. For a year I worked in the kitchen of a very popular brunch destination spot in Chicago, and I absolutely felt that moment.

Yes! My favorite solo activity. With the real, old school grated hash browns. And strong coffee in a generic ceramic mug that keeps getting filled without me asking. And I get an actual newspaper and do the crossword, and sit there for a while but tip very well.

Yeah I'm not a brunch girly. I want to go to a diner and eat dude. I'm awake. And I get hungry in the morning. I want some kind of egg. Some kind of breakfast meat, some kind of potato, coffee that makes my spoon stand up on end. I'm not there for my health. I want to eat. Maybe some OJ on the side

Sometimes I need a 16-page menu with pictures and I need to be able to choose between American, Italian, Greek, and Chinese foods, even though I will order some form of Eggs Benedict every single time.

And please keep my soda glass filled. Also, please don’t ask me, “how is everything… good?” Don’t try to preempt my answer. “You still workin’ on that?” also makes me cringe, like my omelette is a chore. 😂😂😂

Went to a real deal diner outside of Pittsburgh this summer. Burgers as big as your head. Waitress brought the kids an entire can of whipped cream to apply as they’d like to their pancakes. There’s nothing like a diner.

Though I'll still respect if that duct tape is roughly the same color as the vinyl; it makes me feel like the person who put it there loves the place and specifically went the extra mile.

Once I realised you were addressing a venue not an eater, I agree. A good diner is like a comfy pair of jeans or trainers, or a snuggly jumper: no one's saying wow, and you don't feel a need to act smart - you just relax and enjoy life.

This would apply to Democrats. Stop the silo supporting. Offer free universal Healthcare, protecting the environment, gun control, supporting public education, immigration reform, law enforcement reform, and this applies to everyone. Stop changing the menu. And affordable housing.

Preach! Ate at a diner today, great food, rotating dessert display, beat up swivel stools at the counter. I forgot what a joy it was to just get a club sandwich at a place like that. Oh and early 80’s music is apparently the new oldies because that’s all they played…😂
