Amusing - I'm hearing a comeback of XP (Extreme Programming) practice. In the early 2000s these used to be popular (championed by @kentbeck.com). Then died down. They are now surging again. XP practices like small releases, frequent integration, and constant customer input!

XP was just too X to ever become mainstream. I remember interviewing at this place that had an open office and every computer had 2 keyboards, 2 mice and 1 monitor. I imagined spending 8hrs a day like that without any privacy and noped the hell out. Pairing for a bit on a specific task is great.

Erm most of the XP practises became part of the milieu, in the same way that many of the design patterns did. They're in our frameworks/processes so we don't think of them as different things.

I don't do most XP practices myself, but I have been to Agile On The Beach 3 times in the last 9 years and each time a lot of people talked about XP. Agile has always included XP. I suspect people who pretended otherwise were selling something.

The key difference between XP and e.g. Scrum is that the engineering practices matter too. Also important to note that XP includes TDD and Pair Programming. TDD in particular is having a resurgence re: GenAI coding. It is always time for an XP revival!

I though XP was always the agreed best way to build software, even when most companies don't adopt it because it's too disrruptive for them or they just don't have the required experience or base knowledge.

Everything I've seen over the last ~20 agrees - the most high performing teams broadly following XP practices (if not in name, at least in practice)

XP was eaten by agile, agile became abused and bloated, and now XP rises from the ashes to stress the fundamentals once again 🎶 in the circle, the circle of life 🎶

And yes, needless to say much of XP became mainstream at most places (eg CI, short iterations, coding styles etc) We discussed how thanks to AI, all these practices seem more relevant and are naturally picking up (eg TDD etc) with ppl knowing nothing about XP
