I just heard back from the reporter, and I am genuinely speechless. Is “we don’t care” the business model?

This @the-independent.com story is such an obvious lift of mine that they didn’t even bother deleting my site’s referral URL. And no, they do not credit me for reporting it first or (intentionally) link to my story. In j-school, rewording someone else’s reporting was called plagiarism. 1/

Pretty sure they teach elementary school kids that copying off the kid next to you is not ok. High school would get you a 0 score plus a trip to detention for any cases of plagiarism. Maybe the journalist is an AI bot 🤖?

In 4th grade I turned in a "paper" in my Colorado History class about Zebulon Pyke in which I just reworded each sentence about Pyke in our textbook, and I STILL FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT!

Even setting aside ethical reasons (which people shouldn't set aside!) I don't even understand the cynical reason to do this anymore. Most readers don't really care who first reported it and if they read a story that credits someone else for the story they're still ... already reading that story!

So this is unfortunately common in British "journalism," where sleaze is good & they think it's clever to plagiarize, fabricate sources & quotes, lift other people's reporting, &c. American newspapers pull this too, ofc. But it's a little more frowned on here. Her editors will probably promote her

Yeah, it's notable to me that the recent no-credit offenders were two British outlets and an Irish one that imagines itself to be the Irish New York Times, which is fitting since NYT is also famous for not crediting.

"I didn't 'reach out' on account of not being a member of The Four Tops. I did, however, email you about your flagrant plagiarism."

When I was a young reporter forced to do aggregation-style stories, if I had gotten an email like the one I sent her, I would breathing into a paper bag, calling my mom, gathering my purse and leaving the newsroom forever. Even if what the journalist said wasn't true! And in this case it is true!

I have too much to do to be this mad. I have another insane story of injustice I'm working on and too many people to ask for comment. I have to believe this is all worth it, I just have to. ✌️
