They’re packaging it like this so it looks like a shallow trend, but Gen Z has gone through two financial crises, a pandemic, rising fascism, active shooter drills since they were toddlers, and are now being told by the oligarchy they’re to be replaced by robots. Socialism is the logical conclusion.

I don't think we can discount the fact that millennials have lived through the same and saw all the Reagan era propaganda growing up fail spectacularly underneath them. Trump is now the penultimate manifestation of the War on Everything, with the only step left being War on Life on Earth.

And as hyperbolic as that sounds, we're seeing Hegseth and Thiel overtly setup for Christian Nationalist apocalypse on a daily basis, so I'm no longer willing to ignore the fact that these men want a world of radioactive dust as their congregation.

Too many have also watched their 50+ Gen X parents get “right-sized” into an incredibly ageist, transitioning job market, get shamed by politicians for not being willing to working thru their 60s, and deal with the financial/mental impact of a forced early retirement.

Democratic Socialism is essentially compassionate capitalism; anyone can get rich, but no one should be poor. Elitist pseudo-intellectual publications like The Economist would rather dismiss, trivialize, stereotype, or mislabel this philosophy rather than entertain an honest discussion.

And given they did an issue on the rise of Millennial Socialism (which never went away) this is a “shallow trend” that has now stretched over two generations.

How dare you stupid peasants want to have any quality of life whatsoever and not be crushed by debt! How dare you want to benefit from the fruits of your labors! We're job creators! We're entitled to everything! If some of you starve and die, that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Capitalism = extreme right, leads to problems, culminates in authoritarianism Communism = extreme left, leads to problems, culminates in authoritarianism Socialism = centrist, reasonable, achievable

Not just Gen Z either. I even have a maga (possibly former) coworker who was telling me she's starting to think socialized healthcare would be a lot better. This regime has put a magnifying glass on how fucked our system is. If they want illiberal socialism, it's the one we have now for corporations

Yup, I met a young millennial recently who described themselves as a “centrist socialist.” They went from their first vote in 2016 being for Trump to not voting in 2020 or 2024. Now listens to Hasan Piker everyday. (You don’t need to criticize them in my menchies, I’m just reporting what they said)

A lot of people fell for republican or trump bs, myself included when I was younger. It just takes the right event to plant that seed of doubt. I also understand the frustration that would lead to someone deciding not to vote. It was still 1 less vote for trump. I count that as a small victory.

“The system is broken and hurting you because of the liberals” is, despite being a deliberate and bigoted lie regarding causality, a factually more accurate description of reality than “the system is not broken, you are just feeling bad vibes” Small wonder it worked on so many.

socialism is the logical conclusion for those who can read; unfortunately we are facing a huge literacy crisis where students are literally struggling to write emails so i dont think every single gen z is gonna be thinking in terms of economic/political theory

Agreed. The crisis in our public schools is absolutely helping the oligarchs. But that won’t last forever, historically a lot of socialists during its peak in the US 100+ years ago had never been to school a day in their lives. A culture of solidarity becomes more important here.

“We have to fight back against rising socialism!” Gurl, how about you fight back by raising wages, lowering premiums, quitting union-busting, regulating the algorithm, treating workers with respect???? Try it!

That wd be good. Tho Right Wing authoritarians have gotten control of all branches of gov w/o ever doing this. We'd have to make that change, for them to act differently. Tho they are not popular, they are skilled at manipulating the electoral system & their media propaganda networks.

Most media & social media consumed in the U.S. are Right Wing. Sinclair alone covers 40% of households. RW media keep repeating pretty lies about T/GOP & ugly lies about Dem/minorities til the lies wear a groove into ppl's brains. upine.medium.com/the-vast-rea...

1/ Gen Z has the right idea. We should be embracing socialism. It’s past time that we stop treating capitalism like gravity, as though it’s an immutable natural law. No, it’s a made up thing and money is a made up, pretend thing. And we could change the rules anytime we want.

2/ Capitalism is gross and exploitative no matter what and we don’t need it anymore — if we ever did. If we visited the gorilla enclosure at the zoo and one gorilla was sitting on a huge pile of bananas that he had hoarded, we’d be like, “What’s his damage?”

Young Americans just need to sit down and shut up and be grateful they get live in a country with the sort of amazing economy that allows them costs of living four times higher than their parents at barely higher wages, with prices for fripperies like "food" and "gas" and "shelter" increasing daily.
