Everyone should be concentrating on Twitter, it's the one out of these that does the most damage. Facebook has a lot of older people on it. The groups, and articles that appear on people's feeds, it's bad, but Twitter, the AI integration, & how ppl rely on it for breaking news. MUST STOP.

I was just joking last night that it would be hilarious if LinkedIn ended up becoming the last usable social media platform

I took a privacy and surveillance class in college (sounded conspiratorial at the time but everything my prof said is true) LinkedIn is really bad about collecting and leaking data.

Anybody use wire? wire.com/en/ Some non US gov types use it that I know. Signal still in US and has to obey laws there.

I'm finding as a parent that Whatsapp is the most difficult to delete because every classroom and neighborhood group chat takes place there. Ideally we'd all migrate to Signal, but I don't know how to get a critical mass there

X, gone at inauguration. TikTok never had. Substack I apparently have? But I don’t use other than to read and comment on others’. So, easy! FB I could maybe. Instagram…hard. It’s my connection to so many loved ones. It’s how I get my work out there the most and how I’ve met many writers. Ugh.

I’ve gotten rid of or never had most of those, but IG has proven to be hard to jettison. While I don’t post on it at all, it’s my only source for info about local events and orgs. I wish there was a better way for local information and organizing.

Unfortunately people won’t. People don’t care enough to dump the platforms they’re used to. It’s honestly fucking maddening. People like @aoc.bsky.social for example constantly talk about fighting fascists yet she’s way more active on Twitter than here

They will own what they don’t eventually. We need to move to protect users from privacy invasion and TOS shifts on a legislative level.

How do we convince reputable journalists and politicians to get off of X? They are the ones that help legitimize X with each post. X generates sexual abuse and still, these people use X. I don’t get it.

A note on Ghost as an alternative. I've used Ghost for my newsletter for years now and their customer service has always been super responsive whenever I've needed something. I was trying to figure out, a ways back, how to format a poetry post and they helped me with it, across several emails.

it's really upsetting the number of progressives who feel that they can't afford to leave substack bc they'd lose their huge audiences. I get that it's daunting, but braving the loss of a platform is the LEAST you can do. And eventually your huge audience will dwindle anyway bc *they* all left.

Substack is the exact thing I want all the way down as a product, but yeah on the promotion of folks I can't support. And thus, no newsletter. (I'm too irregular about it to take on a subscription. lol)

I try not to share direct links to people's Substacks because I don't like sending people to a platform that might push them to read right wing bullshit fascists.

Lots of parents (including me) rely on what’s app groups to function. Neighborhood based, and school based as well.

I’m dying for an alternative to IG that lets me keep up with friends’ baby and pet photos.

My partner is an artist and it just seems like a necessity. Everything happens there. Real life is just an accessory to insta.
