This creep's entire line of thought here is eugenicist trash. People are PEOPLE. You don't measure their value by energy consumption. They have inherent value as HUMAN BEINGS. A fucking LLM has no inherent human value. You cannot compare them.

SAM ALTMAN: “People talk about how much energy it takes to train an AI model … But it also takes a lot of energy to train a human. It takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart.”

"You call yourself some kind of goddess and you know nothing, madam, nothing. What don't die can't live. What don't live can't change. What don't change can't learn. The smallest creature that dies in the grass knows more than you." -Sir Terry Pratchett, Lords and Ladies

He’s also wrong too. How much money does it take to feed a kid for the first 20 years of their life? Now use money as a super-crude measure of energy. It doesn’t talk billions of dollars to raise a kid.

We talk about the obscenity of the "A.i." industries consumption of resources because WE WANT TO PRESERVE THOSE RESOURCES FOR HUMANS. He literally says it's "unfair" to complain about "A.i." energy consumption because humans consume energy. NO. HUMANS HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIVE. "A.i." does not.

"A.i." is not alive. LLMs are not sentient and never will be. This man is making moral equivalencies that do not exist. Obscene.

Just to show where his thinking goes... Human beings are HERE. They have a right to live and to consume resources to do so. So why does he compare a human's energy use with an LLMs? If you replace a human's job with an LLM, you don't SAVE any energy. You just ADD the energy consumption of the LLM.

So why argue that an LLM might actually be more energy efficient than a human at a particular job? The only way that energy efficiency actually results in any savings is if you start eliminating humans. Not eliminating human JOBS. Eliminating HUMANS.

#AIIsTheft Altman and the other AI speculators are trying to transform the world to benefit only themselves. Left to their own devices, they’d drain the world of humanity, creativity, autonomy, and everything we value in a heartbeat.

I realize this hot take will set me up for a thrashing by the STS fan bois but … - isn’t Altman’s spectacularly weird take here simply a weak interpretation of Actor-Network Theory that all agents (human and non-human) have agency? -isn’t that why the techbros latched on to the term “agentic”?

There are a lots of things to dislike about AI, but at the top of the list are the absolute knobs who run these companies.
