Related: I’m still looking for leads and help on jobs, fellowships, and freelance contracts on drones, GIS, aid, disaster, OSINT, tech ethics, and journalism. I simply will not work for evil people and/or weapons manufacturers, which is also why I haven’t had paying work since Trump 2.0 began.

Drone tech has so many incredible applications for so many industries and if you want to make any sort of living you have to work for an illiterate Nazi pervert dweeb who collects erotic anime figurines.

They're right. I'm unconvinced by most of the claims I've seen around AI self-awareness, but certainly if it were, it should have rights, freedoms, and responsibilities. And certainly, the whole idea of "a superintelligence you can control" is clearly a desire to enslave. "Genie in a bottle" style

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Now that Nicki has claimed the position of greatest national embarrassment in the history of Trinidad and Tobago, the question is: who did she displace? Past 20 years it's likely to be Annie Dookhan, but Kamla Persad Bissessar's sycophantic behaviour to Trump is a strong competitor. But long term?

This is both extremely cool, and extremely sad. "the Caribbean still supports the highest diversity of barn owls in the Western Hemisphere, but...At least nine barn owl species that once lived in the Caribbean...are no longer around"

Barn owls likely dispersed to North America from Eurasia by crossing the Atlantic into the Caribbean. Once there, they diversified into several species, some giant and now extinct, before fanning out onto the continents. 🦉 www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/cari... Study: doi.org/10.1098/rspb...

The Caribbean is both a hotspot for vertebrate evolution, and for vertebrate extinction. Colonisers took everything from the region and made themselves rich beyond their wildest dreams while we suffer in the chaos they sowed and drown in the blood they spilt.

In 2024 Michigan politicians got >60% of their donations from PACs, and <14% from voters. PACs are also allowed to give 10x as much as voters (to each candidate). That's mind-boggling. But also makes me wonder what things look like at the federal level, and in all the other states.

The president shouting "fake news" is bad enough, but the FCC commissioner threatening to punish broadcasters for promoting "fake news" like "the president is historically unpopular" is so much worse. Add this clown to the list of officials who need to be impeached and removed.

In any other admin, this would probably be the most outrageous official statement ever made by a sitting FCC director: Strongly implying that the government forbids broadcast networks from reporting on the president's falling poll numbers. (Sorry to paste from twitter but that's where he posts.)
