Worth noting that most of the people who say Bluesky is dead or useless are journalists, not organizers. Bluesky has been OUTSTANDING for me as an organizer. I've raised THOUSANDS of dollars here, gotten HUNDREDS of people to actual events, gotten LOADS of people to DO POLITICAL THINGS.

Also I have bought so many books and graphic novels from following people on here!! It’s been great for recommendations from general readers, academics, and the authors themselves And often the book recs link into community organising too via fundraisers and topics covered

All this, and I'll add that as data journalists, Bluesky has been a great forum for sharing hyper-niche reporting directly to stakeholder communities and organizations that are closest to the issues. It may not be all that and a bag of chips for the big outlets, but it's great for us indies.

Of course none of this happens through just posting a few links. It comes from spending frankly too much time on this site, lol, interacting and conversing and bullshitting and having fun with friends. And it comes from repeated and strategic repetition of posts and appeals in interesting ways.

In short, it takes WORK and TIME. I think folks with a lot of followers got used to old Twitter as a guaranteed slot machine of interaction. Ain't like that here. Gotta start from scratch, build your community, goof around, have fun, and work to build something with good stuff to offer.

As an activist/organizer, "good stuff to offer" means CLEAR CALLS TO ACTION about stuff you ACTUALLY DEEPLY CARE ABOUT presented in INTERESTING or even FUNNY AND/OR EMOTIONALLY COMPELLING WAYS. Give people something to DO and tell 'em why and they very often will actually do the thing!

I've raised several thousand dollars for my local community for things like medical expenses and car problems. I'm doing a fundraiser right now for a guy who got t-boned while doing deliveries. Bluesky has been more supportive than any other platform for me.

bsky is a great source of clearly sourced news and information. I wish I still had access to the communities i found on twitter - I miss the indigenous and international voices. but it’s such a relief never to run into the sex bots and nazis.

A fundraiser I follow (not sure if he's ok being tagged in) here has had a lot of success right here. And every creator talks about how much better it is for driving traffic compared to X/Facebook.
