This Brooklyn Democratic Party County Committee meeting was an anti-democratic disgrace. Shame on the leaders of the party, who ignored legitimate questions from reformers, tried to get the cops to eject people, insulted dissenters, and pushed through Bichotte-Hermelyn's power grab. 📷🧵

The committee that makes up the Brooklyn Democratic Party held a chaotic meeting Wednesday to elect its leadership team using controversial new voting rules, as an appeals court deliberated on the legality of their actions mere blocks away. hellgatenyc.com/brooklyn-dem...

They don't want to win. They want to stay in power. The machine politicians DGAF about the constituents. They want that lobby money to keep flowing & the govt perks to keep coming. The machine Dems will hold open the door for the fascists while shitting on progressives

The meeting started hours late, after which party leaders repeatedly ignored questions about proxy votes and whether procedural rules had been followed while pushing through votes to validate Bichotte-Hermelyn's power grab. District Leader and reformer Akel Williams' expression kind of says it all.

Assembly member @joannesimonbk52.bsky.social tore into the presiding officers, noting that among other things, a copy of the amendments considered had not been distributed five days before as required. I've never seen her so mad.

Several times during the meeting, Anthony Beckford asked for members of the audience to be removed. The cops weren't particularly happy about being involved. They did not end up removing anyone.

He's mayor of New York. But New York City has counties that operate like separate states. Other counties like Manhattan are just as separate and powerful. Just not as undemocratic.

I live on the other side of the country in WA where these sorts of corrupt shenanigans are pretty unknown. But how is the national party not intervening here? I mean this reflects on them too. Seems to me that the national party should be chartering local party organizations in some way

The Catholic Church actually provides a useful model here I think. They have no problem with pulling the plug on any local congregations or bishops who stray too far from the party line.

Really appreciate you covering this, Greg! Seeing what they do when they know the spotlight is on makes me wonder what shenanigans county parties all over the country get up to behind the scenes
