I assumed such a radical departure would be rough around the edges. As an iPhone Mini fan, I was looking at this as more pocket-friendly than any other iPhone (possibly, have not seen one in person) still on the market. However, I was also certain I would not be trying gen1 of this.

Great write-up as always, John. This confirms many of my suspicions about the Duo. It will be fascinating to see not only how it sells, but how ownership retention goes.

It's a 75% device, and I'm going to use the heck out of it for two years, then replace it with the 95% device that solves the niggles. Both will be fun, transformative experiences I predict.

Trying to harsh my buzz. I listed my current iPad mini on eBay the day of the keynote. Bought an early case, taped quarters inside it to reach weight. Fits in pocket. A little heavy, but doable. And both hands have had ortho surgeries and my dexterity is poor. I think it's gonna work out awesome.

I'm absolutely loving my Duo. FaceID sucks for me - I wear glasses that bloc IR for tracking as well as sun protection reasons, and vary my hairstyle frequently, so it only reliably unlocks maybe 60% of the time. But TouchID is rock solid (and I wear an Apple Watch 100% of the time).

The chonkiness is real, but dimensions are kinda close to the original iPhone, even a little thinner: iPhone 115 × 61 × 11.6 mm Duo 117.8 × 84.1 × 11.3 mm

Informative. I thought the rant against the Touch ID was a bit much. A friend of mine canceled his order based on this review. I'm still in. I'll give it a year.

great review, thanks a lot! was considering buying a Duo but the Touch ID situation settles it for me. It was my biggest question mark and you've answered it decisively. I tried to live with Touch Id on iPad Air but upgraded to the Pro in less than a year because Touch ID was so frustrating.

I worked on the original iPad (and, unknowingly, on the original iPhone). Your thoughts reiterate most of my concerns. It feels like a foldable iPad mini that marcom felt wouldn't sell as well as an iPhone, so they put a phone screen on the outside and branded it an iPhone.
