I agree that the tech backlash has a lot to do with the fact that Silicon Valley has pretty much given up on giving us cool things - and has trained us to assume that tech products that *seem* cool are probably secretly evil. I wrote about this last year:

little-flying-robots.ghost.ioI Just Want a Cute Robot Lamp That Isn't EvilApple's engineers have figured out how to design a robot lamp so adorable that everyone I've shown the video to says they'd die for it. By studying how to translate human expression into the movement...

That really struck me with AI. Instead of telling us how it'd make life better, the messaging was "good luck affording food after a robot takes your job, sucker!"

The whole point of the Robotic Workforce is so PEOPLE don't have to work because robots don't need to be PAID and we can therefore spend MORE MONEY ON PEOPLE!!! If the people are not regarded, it may as well be a robot army that will do nothing and help no one. A waste of resources!!!

The point of "AI" is to sell stock. Silicon Valley never tried selling AI to consumers SV doesn't care about selling tech. Silicon Valley is an extension of Wall Street, and finance is what counts. The bubble is the point.
