While I'm venting, "Kobayashi Maru" should be capitalized. Canonically it's the name of a starship and the simulation is named after it. In real life, "Maru" is a common suffix for Japanese ship names. It means "circle" (more or less) and as such is good luck for a successful round trip voyage.

This is bad, don't get me wrong -- we need to rein in the pardon power -- but it's also hard to square it with the doomer takes that Trump will never leave office, or that the fix is in for future elections. If they don't expect anyone else to ever be in charge, what's the danger they're preventing?

It's actually pretty funny to do a Google image search on "trolley problem" and see all the messed up ideas image slop generators have about what trolley tracks look like.

After years of social media use I've come to the conclusion that bubbles are good, actually. In no other aspect of our lives are we expected to invite assholes over on the theory that they might be convinced to adopt our views. I didn't sign up because I wanted another source of stress in my life.

I used to be pretty slow with the block button, largely because I don't want to curtail my own reach, but recently I've been getting enough hostile QTs that put my words in front of various TESCREAL cult-members and the responses are getting tedious. So, blocking it is!

hamming once said "mathematicians stand on each others' shoulders and computer scientists stand on each others' toes." and although programmers have moved to full and semi-auto footguns this remains as true as ever

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

Marijuana legalization was seen as so far fetched it was a standard joke, a position you'd assign a character if you didn't want people to take them seriously. Now it's legal for medical use in 41 states and for recreational use in 24.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Went through some of my old blocks, out of curiosity. It's remarkable how many accounts I blocked during 2024 just stopped posting after the election.

Next time Tesla is short on operating cash: Elon: "So um introducing uh the new uh Tesla Choadster. The only car with quantum teleportation." *Elon gets into the car, an obvious plastic mock-up. The door wobbles precariously on hardware store hinges as he closes it.*

*The car disappears and then reappears via an obvious stopped-camera trick. Elon gets out inexplicably wearing a completely different shirt.* Elon: "This is uh the actual car you can buy in 2052. Non-refundable reservations start uh at uh $420,000. Um and there's the Giggity Edition for $690,000."

Chat, is it ethical to demand a sentient car do tricks for your amusement? Does "Transformers" ever address this? Is Turbo Teen considered a sentient car post-transformation, or is he still considered a human?

This fits well with a trend I'm seeing of publishers writing "no generative AI" clauses into contracts.

No ISBNs in Canada for AI writing. This is a fantastic policy, and every country should do the same. www.canada.ca/en/library-a...

Oh, Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You In The Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad For Tax Purposes

The disturbing thing about AI discourse is that AI boosters are so misanthropic. They persist in working on things they claim will destroy humanity. They demand human rights for LLMs, but are selective about which *actual* humans they think deserve rights. They hate people and love machines.

It's wild how just during my lifetime the UK has gone from being an important cultural and financial power to a nation whose motto is "we used to be a proper country" and whose only major export is transphobia.

Honestly, general issues with AI aside, I don't see how using it would improve my life in any way. - My current job doesn't need it. - The main use case seems to be development, and I'm un-hireable as a developer due to being over 40. - What am I gonna do, use it to take the fun out of my hobbies?

I'm at the age where I think I get to start picking and choosing which technologies I think are worth using. I only briefly dabbled in VR, skipped NFTs entirely, and I think I'm gonna skip this.

"Our product is so powerful it might destroy us all" seems like weird investor pitch, but I've never really understood investors. Maybe they've all bought in to Roko's Basilisk.

It says a lot about Will Stancil's paper-thin understanding of AI that he thinks the Turing Test, a test that relies on fooling a human conversation partner and was sometimes passed by extremely simple chatbots as far back as the 1960s, is a useful measure of whether LLMs are intelligent.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

I think the Turing Test (which is for REASONING, not CONSCIOUSNESS) remains the single best test for machine intelligence. People have an incredibly poor understanding of it and often treat it as some kind of rigid test environment, rather than a principle for thinking about a hard-to-define concept

My understanding is it's been decades since anyone actually working in the field has taken the Turing Test seriously. I wouldn't be shocked if it's being dusted off now to juice some IPOs, though, seeing as it's so easy to pass.

I don't normally reply to Will's posts, because trying to convince him of anything is like trying to dig a hole in solid basalt with a plastic shovel, but he's wrong here. ChatGPT has all kinds of known harms, including encouraging people with latent mental instabilities to spiral into psychosis.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

It is absolutely bananas that one of the most prominent anti-AI experts in America is talking like this. Talking to ChatGPT isn’t like doing heroin or downloading child porn. It will not hurt you and has no ethical valence. It will help you understand the nature of something that is now endemic.

The more someone uses chatbots the less I trust them to know the limits and capabilities of the software, because the ELIZA Effect is well documented. Blake Lemoine is a great cautionary tale here; he went down a rabbit hole because asked a chatbot if it was alive, and the chatbot said yes.

Preemptive warning: If you change the subject to anything else Stancil related I will add you to an appropriate blocklist. ("Stancil-obsessed," "Sealion," or both.) There's WAY too much discourse about the man already.

The Onion and John Stewart made their chops busting the media for bothsiding bullshit. Then became friends with people in the media and adopted the media's narrative of "Republicans are evil, but lets shit on Democrats". The saddest sell outs are the ones who don't even realize they sold out.

When I read something someone has had ChatGPT "clean up and organize" I often feel like a gold miner trying to find the nugget in five pounds of gravel.
