to be fair if you are a video game executive and you see how much roblox is making on gambling traps made by and for minors you would also be like we are the biggest idiots alive for paying game developers

I understand the process behind "why make anything when children will do it for free" but is roblox actually making money or is this like every other c suite brain incinerating trend where its incredibly oversold.

Roblox is hilarious because it’s a profitable game that houses a microcosm of the games industry, where like two games built within Roblox have more daily active users than the entirety of steam, so execs catching on a year later are trying to make the next one and sell it to a saturated market

i havent checked the latest data or anything but i believe roblox is making tons of money and also still unprofitable lmao in the classic tech industry need to abandon sustainability for growth

Interesting! Very bad! It is "fun" learning about this stuff in the same way I learn about whats going on in sports games. Its like staring into the shit from Event Horizon but if it was secretly more popular than religion with anyone under 20

At the same time though, it makes me want to just sit all video game CEOs in a room and ask one simple question: "Do you all drive the same car?" I genuinely do not understand how it's alien to them that their studios have established brand identities that work in their niches.

to them it is escaping the gig economy + the cost of making a game a game like 007 First Light likely has made no real profit (as in, not even close to enough to fund the costs to a sequel) and even if it did then they need 007 First Light 2 to also sell like 8 million copies to fund the 3rd vs.

gambling and getting a live service roblox type deal which is like getting a 8 million seller game every single year if you're say, a Platinum Games where a new game is gambling: would you rather gamble on keeping the pretty bad for profits status quo or gamble to make a kazillion dollars forever

the sell games business has only ever been very sustainable for a very few number of publishers (your nintendos, EAs, activisions) and now that it's getting even less sustainable and the lottery exists many execs will keep buying lottery tickets and hoping bc they think they will lose anyways

Well remember Roblox does pay developers. They earn a share of robux sold, literally revenue sharing. Now that’s distributed like a platform, so not evenly, but it is material. Enough that Roblox isn’t profitable.

this is what the free market does, it is an evolutionary process to produce the most efficient forms of extraction and exploitation. without government legislation and enforcement to regulate this shit on both the labour and consumer side it will only get worse forever

It gets even better! You can design a system of “grinding” for the currency you’ll need TO gamble, then sell people a means of skipping the tedium you put in there in the first place! Heck you can even get people to gamble on THAT if you get them hooked enough!

Then you add limited-time gambling opportunities, timed such that if you want to have a decent chance at getting everything there is no way to get there just by grinding, and you have the modern gacha formula
