if a white supremacist says anything you should assume every single word is a lie unless completely independently verified by an entirely unrelated source. if they say it is thursday you should ask an expert on days of the week. this should be the bare minimum standard in this media landscape

I normally wouldn't advocate for this style of deductive reasoning, but given how many people fail to pass the first post, I've lately been promoting the idea, "if you can't decide on an issue, look at the people who are promoting it." If it's the worst people in the world, choose the opposite.

People continuing to talk about what Arday may or may not have done in the face of THE ENTIRE UK PRESS harassing him into killing himself like his "lies" are remotely relevant in the face of a man being dead is fucking lunacy. "Was he lying" does not matter while the press walk free. 100 years jail.

Yes and I get your point, but not just a white supremacist. ANYONE. There's a famous dictum every journalist learns when they're starting out: If your mother tells you she loves you, check it out. Most of them promptly forget it.

Nobody's saying you shouldn't check facts from both sides, but the problem is that while one side has to walk on eggshells so the right doesn't make an scandal out of it, they keep breaking the rules and are minimally or never punished for it

for mother example if the mother constantly proves that she loves you, that's enough to trust her. Blind distrust is just blatant paranoia it doesn't make sense to treat someone who has never done anything wrong with the same severity compared to someone who constantly makes mistakes.

My point is that journalists (should) have incredibly strict standards for everyone. When you're dealing with someone like a white supremacist, those standards, or hurdles, should be orders of magnitude more strict. In other words, the failure here was mind-boggling. I was simply agreeing.

You misread these news articles as "proof" that Arday actually did everything he claimed to do & also didn't commit plagiarism. Re-read the articles with a healthier dose of "where's the evidence." Yes, Arday was brutalized by viciously gleeful racists. Yes, Arday was a "fantasist" & plagiarist.

the entire country went off on "he might be controversial, but if his claims are true there are tough questions to answer...." about an open, proud nazi and now a black man is dead on that nazi's behalf. any just nation would be handing out convictions to editors across the entire media class

I have a similar form of that idea that I sometimes use: If Hitler says that the sky is blue then that doesn't automatically mean that it isn't but you definitely need to stick your head out of the window to check before you believe it.
