even if ai could perfectly sort through information with zero errors and deliver instant results it would not be worth the environmental cost. even if ai had no environmental cost it would not be worth its every output being unfixably error-prone. imagine if it was both with no upside lol

My bank app is now making a calendar of my bills. It's really annoying actually. I can do that myself and I'm worried about people not thinking and using their brains. It might not be ai but I don't like stuff doing things I didn't ask

The environmental impact of generative AI is largely overblown. You could make thousands of queries to a service like ChatGPT for a similar amount of water that's consumed to make a single hamburger, and this assumes the datacenter is using evaporative cooling.

Its not overblown because every single person is making thousands of queries every single day whether they want to or not because the tech is forced into every device and runs the queries regardless of whether youre even looking at them.

Not to mention, at least when you make a hamburger you get calories and nutrients out of it. What do you get out of a thousand generative AI queries? Especially considering most of them arent even necessary, and many of them are riddled with errors.

This depends on the individual's goals. Some people create software that helps put food on their table, or pays their rent. Furthermore, your claim that most output is riddled with errors isn't necessarily true. I feel like you don't actively use these tools yourself.

Every time you do an internet search, write an email with google or outlook, work on an Adobe acrobat document, for just a few examples from my own life. They add up fast.

there's a high concentration of sociopaths in business leadership positions, and to them the outside world doesn't exist, and if it's cheap enough, any amount of errors is acceptable. There's a really fundamental divide in humanity becoming super apparent

Pretty insane how much people have moved past the environmental cost and effects because annoying people posted a certain study that got "debunked" but then you hear the stories of it poisoning water and communities

Or how much water it used but then you get whataboutism of everything else that uses water and don't know what to tell people but that also ain't good I live in the southwest and water sources are getting fucking smaller and smaller and our states portion of water getting cut

its weird seeing people bring up golf courses and the excess of corn monocrops like people don't also complain about those being big wastes of water/land Like yeah there's already a bunch of dumb shit diverting water away from people, we don't need more shit when we could literally just not do that

I mean maybe that's true but I feel like if we're going to argue against AI we need the facts on our side, acting like its worse than these other things and has to be stopped NOW or we'll lose all our water is not true. There are other real, tangible issues you can point to and argue against
