Nyc is using ranked voting for the mayoral election. So you rank 1 candidate your 1st choice, another your 2nd, etc. If you leave a candidate out entirely, it's a much higher likelihood that your 1st choice, who might be someone else's 2nd or 3rd, gets elected.
