Broadening recognition of a shared global struggle for human rights and dignity is indeed fatal for Yglesias's worldview

Yes well it does require things like “empathy” and possessing a basic understanding that all of our lives are interconnected

Why does it seem to me that these people do not value friendships? A basic tenet of human society has been that when you need help you reach out to friends for help. But this worldview assumes that you don’t need any friends outside of your immediate community.

There’s a narrow way to reframe what Yglesias clumsily says that has some merit: It’s not healthy for our mental health to obsess over every election in the world. We already expend so much energy on our own elections! Now I gotta sweat out the Serbian elections too? We need a mental health break!

I agree that Yglesias's framing is reactionary and typical of the radical centrist in him. I was offering a different take on our obsession with elections everywhere in this age of social media. Yes, the results are important but the effects on our mental health can be all consuming!

Probably true! Being bombarded with anxiety-inducing news at all times is almost certainly unhealthy for us. I just don't think that's what Matt's concerned with (but he, too, should Log Off)

In truth, the real fatality is listening to these 'moderate' pundits about anything of substance His whole schtick is being backward status quo and that is what has led the Dems to the state they have been stuck in for 10 years..........don't go too far, be careful to not upset the rich donors

The coming election in the USA has huge consequences for the global economy. This is of interest to the many who don’t live there. Is this not obvious?

I’m currently paying twice the price for diesel compared to the start of the year and knock-on effects of that also. It’s true that being a political tragic is probably not healthy though.

It's almost like I don't want anyone anywhere to live under far-right governments, and the fact is, the more power the far right has across the world, the more of a chance it has to get even worse in the U.S.
