He's a well-realized character, but also thuddingly boring and yes, the character happens to be a large-diameter asshole. More Teferi, please, especially in his "clearly inspired by Idris Elba's devastating good looks" era.

"Guy believes he was born ontologically evil and in his efforts to do more good than harm to make up for it, he ends up doing way more harm" is def not a hero, but as a character he's much more than a villain. Like many old-walkers, the theorist is "what if a god tried to be a good person"

That being said he could have actually helped Tezzeret defeat Bolas for the consortium but was huffing his own farts so bad that he let Tezzeret and himself get their asses kicked instead of doing the right thing. Which leads to Jace leting Tezzeret get mindslaved by Bolas Now Tez has trust issues

Honestly one of the more challenging parts of Teferi’s growth is a lot happens off screen when he settles down. He was personally traumatized by Urza and was effectively a god. It’s nice to know he became a good dad and grandfather. (His grand daughter is great in Omens of Chaos)

You can argue that Jace is an interesting and realized character without trying to say he's a "good" guy, the latest he's been even arguably a heroic character was the parts of Phyrexia: All Will Be One pre: getting got.

Jace in the fiction is a good person and constantly struggles with the cruelty of his powers. Which is what makes him an interesting character. That's also not the point op is making, their point is that Jace was a twat in some old flavor texts and the internet assumes that's all he is

Jace's underlying character arc has always been that he's a guy who can kill you with just a thought, but hates that about himself. He sees himself as a monster, and knows that the worst parts of himself are so much worse than the worst parts of anyone else. The Theorist *is* that part of him.
