There’s another shop’s worth of space added on, with a lot more seating, and a stairwell that leads down into a dark pit where you can’t see the bottom. Think it’s maybe metaphorical but it could also just be a historic building code thing.

Being independent and not taking sponsorship money has absolutely hurt the reach of our podcast, especially as trends have changed and discoverability is down, but I would rather die than tie its future to anything other than our Patreon and our desire to keep making a podcast.

Night Vale has always been a 100% independent podcast, while most independent podcasts at a similar level have sold to large companies. Being independent has protected us from a lot of the up and down of the industry, but it's also, to be clear, incredibly fucking hard work and annoying

Look if I'm going to spend an hour of my day waiting in something called a "pre-queue" and then an hour in the actual queue only to not be able to buy the thing I wanted, I'm going to channel my frustration into marketing my podcast.

The Vorthos Cast@thevorthoscast.bsky.social

The Vorthos Cast never sells out because we're supported by our patrons at Patreon.com/TheVorthosCast, where you don't have to wait in a queue to listen to the latest episode! Joining our Patreon is like getting into the pre-queue for new episodes, since they're released early to our supporters!

I worked at a Panera Bread for three weeks where they gave me the sandwich bible and put me on a lunch rush alone on one of my first days. I asked them to take me off the schedule the day I showed up in a t-shirt and they decided I should work in the freezer all shift.

When you use Google to “translate” text, you aren’t translating it. You’re using a sped up bilingual dictionary. Translation is an act of transformation, which is the underpinning of art. There is no difference in using AI to generate art and using it to “translate” a text. Both are shameful.

When you engage with people who experienced slavery as real, flesh-and-blood individuals, if you have any empathy at all it will churn your stomach and make you question a great many things about the world as it was and is.

Slavery was and is a real thing that has brutalized hundreds of millions of people over the course of human history, if someone tells me a fucking chatbot is enslaved I'm immediately throwing hands. It's not cute, it's not intriguing, it's an insult to real people who suffered and suffer now.

This was a really great interview and Alison is a wonderful guest to have on. It's always lovely to talk about making stories and writing characters with someone who knows how to do it so well.

We were joined by the incredible @alisontheperson.bsky.social for today's episode to talk about writing Reality Fracture and what it meant to be asked to kill Jace Beleren. We talk craft, inspiration, and the behind-the-scenes scheduling that made all of this grand story arc work.

Since a lot of people on this website want to advocate for alt-text, just a heads up that best practice is to describe only what you see without interpretation, to avoid describing elements that aren't relevant or important, and to not describe images which are merely decorative.

Signed: A person who has literally made a career out of writing image and video descriptions and has spent his entire adulthood working with professionals who write alt-text for a living. Your alt-text should not say that the capybara looks relaxed. Just FYI.

This is the way to think about it: When you look at an image, you are using what you see to determine what you believe is happening. Your job, as an alt-text writer, is to give the user of a screen reader the ability to "see" the same image as you, not to tell them what *you* see.

Nobel Laureate Anne Carson, with one of my all-time favorite opening lines and one of my all-time favorite closing lines.

Finished Hollywood, Ending, the new John Green. That man can write a fucking novel. He wrote good YA novels that were good when I was a YA and he wrote this incredible novel and I do think everyone should read it.

context. sentiment. inferences. People seriously cannot do these things anymore. That’s why they angrily demand you spell out every joke, every reference, super duper promise you mean something only this one prescribed way. They cannot do it for themselves or tolerate the any ambiguity.

To understand the kind of person I am: There's a spider living in the corner above my shower and has been there through several bathroom cleanings. My only concern is that I simply don't believe there's enough for it to eat. How is it surviving? I hope it's okay.

It’s wonderful having Henn on the podcast and they’ve been such a huge part of keeping episodes coming out every week in ways that most listeners won’t know. Because we keep him in a contraption. And that contraption powers the podcast. Why is he not in the contraption right now? Get back in the co–

Today marks officially one year since I joined @thevorthoscast.bsky.social :) 🎉🎉 I'm very happy to be here. The cast folks are some of the best here in the Magic community. Very grateful to have a place where I feel my own love of magic story is echoed tenfold. 💖

I think it's sooooo cool that my workplace got a license for Microsoft Copilot that makes it so there's annoying new Copilot things on every single application I use with no way of turning them off or hiding them. Literally no way I can opt out of having annoying summaries on every Word doc I open.

I am a huge fan of the Zeta set for all of the reasons @parker.luckypaper.co spells out here: It sucks! It's great! There is no wrong path to the realization that you, too, can be an artist.

For the same reason that I don't ever have to see Nolan's Odyssey to think that it's an incredible film, if only because it got so many people discussing the classics, film as a medium, and taking criticism seriously, I can look at the Zeta set and think it's outstanding without buying any of it.
