With a budget believed to be well over a billion dollars, GTA 6 will have to be one of the best selling games of all time just to break even. https://bit.ly/4dfFiqw

quotes from the article that contradict the framing of the headline: "The concept of success in the corporate bureaucracy of a publicly traded company is arcane, ever changing, and subject to factors completely outside anyone’s control" (1/2)

"Yes, it would be a stupid, unnuanced, self-sabotaging conclusion for investors to draw, but boardroom capitalism is often an arena of nonsense and vibes." good thing games journalism isnt out here promoting rancid vibes and drawing that conclusion with "break even" type framing!!

While there are different topics to talk about game finances are important to look at (maybe not all the time) as companies need money to function and their games to do well to satisfy investors if consumer want the games

This is also only a general statement. Like if I want good final fantasy games I need the series to sell so square enix sees its worth time and effort. Games are art but there is a business behind it

This image makes me happy. Like, yeah, I hope it doesn't! Enjoy all your awards and your Wikipedia number dick measuring contest in exchange for making the most expensive, morally-reprehensible nothingburger ever. Maybe then you'll STOP MAKING THEM.

GTA 5 made a billion in its first three days in game sales alone. That's before shark cards and microtransactions and reselling all over again on the next gen of consoles. It's generated over $8billion now. They'll be fine.

Breaking even is a failure to investors. Even making money is failure to investors. Investors want the company to make more money than it did last time, no matter how much that number is. That means you are fighting GTAV's rev plus the difference in production costs between V and VI.

The phrase "enough money" would lead many to believe it wont break even or that it wont make enourmous profit, when in reality it will easily do both of these things, what it wont do, is satiate the even increasing hunger of a bunch of billionare investors with a hording mental illness.

It will make a hell of a lot more than a billion dollars. GTA5 has made well over 10 billion dollars in revenue over its lifespan and GTA6 will be the biggest selling game of all time without question. No story here really.

It doesn’t need to make back its money, not from game sales. They could easily sell it as a loss leader knowing they’ll make their money off GTA6 Online. If anything the sensible thing is to make it £59/$59 so that everybody buys it, which gets them in the  GTA 6 ecosystem ready for online to drop.

At least there's not any historical circumstances happening in the world that would affect how much money people have to spend on videogames. Instead of buying GTA6 I'll probably buy a few days of groceries or buy gas for the week (but not both).

I hope these kind of practices bankrupt every business that tries. It's blatantly irresponsible, fiscally reckless and cruel to the working staff. We don't need another GTA6 or Star Citizen, we need more modest projects & budgeting. Ballooning budgets only lead to bankruptcies and trouble.

I love that we get absolutely amazing smaller budget games. But that $1B cost and decade of development means it MUST be amazing....watch the base game cost about $100. It's why I love E33, Alabaster Dawn, and all sorts of indie games, I can't wait for Mina the Hollower.

Tell that to the 5 million dollars they are going to make today. Rockstar a billion down right now. CIG is a billion up, already, without a release.

What did it take CIG to get to this point? Frankly, I doubt anyone *could* copy their success with STAR CITIZEN. They benefited from timing and a specific series of events, right when space games were unpopular, a popular game maker who had huge success a few decades prior, crowdfunding was new.

Well people have so much spare cash to throw around nowadays, especially for big purchases like a highly priced premium game that requires the latest hardware. Its probably just a good thing Rockstar will be releasing it in a time of economic prosperity, optimism and low prices for game systems.

I seriously hope it fails. Games shouldn’t take a decade and a billion dollars to make. Also, it’s gonna be on the GTA engine, so enjoy tapping X to run and fighting with the scene director when you fail a mission because you didn’t do exactly what they wanted and tried to be creative.

bro it has no chance of SUCCEEDING. the world's on fire, everyone's fucking broke and have you even paid the fuck ATTENTION to the news? fans have been driven away in droves off the sheer fact that Rockstar is one of the biggest scumbag companies out there. folks hate them like they hate Blizzard.

People have been gassing up GTA6 like it's the second coming of Christ. It doesn't have to be bad to fail, it just has to not live up to the impossible hype it's generated for itself, which is well within the realm of possibility.

The quality of the game has very little to do with whether or not it “fails”, unless it’s completely broken (it won’t be) it’s going to be a sales success. RDR2 made 750 million dollars in 3 days, and this will be several times bigger. Whether or not it’s *as successful* as V is up in the air

GTA has reached the point the avatar movies are where it literally doesn’t matter if it’s actually good or not anymore, all that matters is how expensive and big it is

Yeah but at least with those movies, there'll be technologies that can end up on other productions, so it's an engineering investment. with GTA it's going to be entirely on their engine that won't be licensed out

Long before I read a single book on economy or politics, I noted the gaming industry. The crunchtime, consumer hostile DRM, the studios that get bought out & shut down, the microtransactions, the lootboxes. Remember Bullfrog, Maxis, Origin, Westwood and the rest?

LINE MUST GO UP. Capitalism is inherently unsustainable, the addiction to record profits hollow out the infrastructure. The companies get bought out, the workers get fired and there's a spike on the stock market. Eventually the parasites run out of victims, and the whole thing crashes down.

This is exactly why "S-Tier" projects operate on a completely different set of rules. For a project of this scale, it's not about units sold anymore. Sales are just the onboarding phase. To actually recover that enormous allocated capital, it has to function as a long-tail value creation platform.

I think that's the new definition of "unsustainable." And I have a PS5 Pro...the fact that they're not releasing it simultaneously on PC has convinced me to not buy it at all for Playstation. So let your accountants calculate THAT in, Sony and Rockstar, HAH. 🫥

Releasing simultaneously on PC is the stupidest thing they could do. All that does is enable data miners, mods, cheaters, and piracy. PC gamers have to wait until console gamers have had a chance to buy and enjoy the game before they ruin it.

You're suggesting I go on a 100% media blackout until I finish the game so that PC gamers can be free to steal and run the game? No. Fuck that. Their shitty behavior shouldn't have any influence on my life, and it won't as long as their access is restricted for a while.

If you don't look those things up, they won't impact you in any way. That's a pretty weak argument. We know Rockstar is doing it so they can focus on PS5 players first, and then double-dip with a second sale on PC for those who want access to all the (better) PC features.
