Ford’s biggest problem will be trying to sell these at their stealerships. Dealers cannot make money long-term on EVs because they don’t need oil changes or tons of other mechanical items needing service. So, dealers will slap huge markups or steer buyers to gas cars. The dealership model must go.

Meh. Slate is where it's at. The fathom with all its AI garbage and making it even more un-servicable by linking entertainment system with critical systems in one computer is going to be a nightmare. Only Ford can work on it. Then there's all the data collection with connected bullshit.

That's what most pickups have become. Sedans for people who worry about towing a trailer they don't even own

Putting a smaller battery in as an attempt to reach a profit margin is not the right move. All EVs should be designed to be as efficient as possible but should never use that as a reason to ship a smaller battery. The Fathom should come with a 80kwh battery at minimum. Even that might be a bit small

??? In what world is the 300 mile long range pack too small? I drive for a living and thats plenty. For normal people, the 225 base is borderline excessive. Kwh < range. A 200 kwh pack in a vehicle that goes 400 miles is just more expense.

The range estimates are not what I am concerned with. The issue is supplementing a smaller battery to hit those estimates via efficiency gains alone. Especially when towing or just the winter, nothing beats pure battery capacity. I agree that big batteries are wasteful, just need a balance.

I have stated multiple times that when we start to see solid state batteries in the 30s. I hope manufacturers keep capacities where they are currently and instead shrink the physical size of the battery.

Incredible how willing some people are to self-report that they don't care about how good the workers live

America refuse to meet market prices of other brands/countries. Hell, Kias and Hyundai are nice and cheaper than Ford, etc and they have plants here. You know what the Trump regime did? Deported 300 South Koreans. BYD won't even bother to sell to Americans. This admin did it to us.

I'm speaking directly to labor conditions in China. Although the conversation would be incomplete without conversely recognizing that unions fight automation while Chinese mfg has no such conundrum

Ford is developing an affordable $30,000 midsize electric pickup—internally codenamed Fathom—to reset its EV strategy and target high-volume profitability. However, achieving this requires overcoming steep hurdles: radical cost reduction, assembly overhauls, and stiff low-cost competition.

"Not surprisingly, consumers were a little hesitant to use Ford's new 'colonic imprint' starting system, which requires users to insert a 27 inch sensor into the anus for 'authentication and data collection'." A company spokesperson stated that the system is undergoing a revision to 26.5" later on.
